Retro fitting Driver Alert System (DAS)

NB: The Author Takes No Responsibility for Damage or Injury to Person/Persons or Vehicle as a Result of Following This Guide.

    Good day all

After months of surfing the net and comparing VCDS auto scans kindly sent to me from Tiguan owners from here in Australia and around the world. I have at last got this function up and going in my 2012 Tiguan.

    You will need 3 things

    Firstly

A Genuine Ross Tech VCDS cable to code/ recode the #19 CAN Gateway module, the #17 instrument panel module, the #61 battery regulator module and any other module that may need recoding after the replacement of the CAN Gateway. A cracked cable using out dated software is a recipe for a disaster as other modules coding may be modified without you knowing.

Secondly an instrument panel that supports this function. I have attached a copy of my instrument details for your perusal. Essentially all face lifted Tiguan's from late 2011 should support this.

    Address 17: Instruments (J285) Labels: 5K0-920-xxx-17.clb
    Part No SW: 5N0 920 873 A HW: 5N0 920 873 A
    Component: KOMBI H05 0705
    Serial number: 00000000000000
    Coding: 111F00
    Shop #: WSC 01357 011 00200
    ASAM Dataset: EV_Kombi_UDS_VDD_RM09 A04716
    ROD: EV_Kombi_UDS_VDD_RM09_VW21.rod
    VCID: 3147D85A60DCE296249-8064

It is important your instrument panel matches or exceeds the values highlighted in bold. ie 873 A B C etc

Alternatively you can check if your instrument panel supports it by going into module17>adaption> and look for a function in the dropdown menu called "Pause Recommendation" By default this should be set to active if not try it and if it works then proceed to the next stage.

I have discovered there is a "highline" version of the CAN gateway that contains the software to drive the "Driver Alert System"
I have listed below a number of CAN Gateways that appear to have software (SW) versions that support DAS.
Prako from his research on ETKA has kindly identified these gateways have at least 2 model versions, one that supports DAS have a model number (PR-EM1) and those that don't have a model number of PR-EM0

    7N0 907 530 P
    7N0 907 530 R
    7N0 907 530 H
    7N0 907 530 AJ
    7N0 907 530 AE
    7N0 907 530 AL
    7N0 907 530 AM
    7N0 907 530 AN

There may be others but these above have been confirmed by their owners. It is advisable to check beforehand as those vehicles fitted with Xenon's or Keyless entry may have the highline Gateway already . To check go into module 19>adaption> drop down menu Channel 5 DAS active. Change the value from 0 to 1. If there is no change in the MFD then you will have to upgrade your CAN Gateway module to a highline PR-EM1 version. I got mine from Speed Auto spares but he appears to have run out of stock so here are links to other sellers on Aliexpress

    To change the module

Firstly do a full autoscan of your existing setup and have it handy as you will have to recode the CAN Gateway and relist all your installed modules. You will also have to recode you #61 (Battery Regulator) and #4F (Cent Elec module) if you have Bluemotion & a sunroof fitted. Module 61 and 4F are virtual modules and are part of the CAN Gateway and share the same serial number and software versions see below where I have listed my #19 & #61 modules. These are the only two modules that Iknow of but there may be others.

In RHD cars the Gateway module is located behind the glove box. I do not know off hand where it is located in LHD models but I think it is close to the steering column.

To remove the glove box unclip the dash board panel next to the door. Open the glove box and remove the three torx screws at the top and the glove box lamp.Close the glove box and remove the two bottom torx screws and gently pull the glove box unit forward and then rest it on the passenger floor after disconnecting the glove box light. Be careful in not pulling out the AC pipe that cools the glove box.

Looking straight ahead you will see a black plastic module the size of a cigarette box mounted on a metal frame with a distinct red 24 pin plug going in to it. This is the CAN Gateway! Unclip the red plug exchange out the modules and re assemble in the reverse order as described above.

    Coding

This looks complex and is pretty daunting when you see every module listed red with errors when you fire up VCDS after doing the CAN Gateway exchange but ignore this.

Go straight to module 19 and recode it with your saved value from your auto scan you would have done prior to removal of the old CAN Gateway (in my case the value was 356003) VCDS will then ask you if you want to use the default work shop values of 12345 123 12345 or the existing ones saved in the gateway or choose the personalised saved values that you can enter when VCDS is first installed on your laptop. I chose to use my personalised values which I set to my Tiguan's factory WSC values of 01357 011 00200 before I started the retrofit. I did this to maintain originality with the other existing modules ie the dealer will never know I fitted this after the car left the factory!

Secondly go into the installation list and tick all the modules you had listed as installed prior to the changeover and save. Miraculously you will see most if not all your errors disappear!

In my case I had to recode the #61 module the battery regulator, it is part of the CAN Gateway which was no issue as I already saved the old coding beforehand.

I then checked my MFD and now have an additional menu called ASSISTANTS with a sub menu allowing me to switch DAS on and off!

    Happy Days!

Next job the ABS controller to activate indirect TPMS!

Wow! Your many hours of investigation has paid off!!!!

Hopefully others can now benefit from all the hard work you have put in to enable this function.

Do you know if people with the pre 2012 facelift (2008-2011) can get this function to work by upgrading the CAN Gateway?

Where was your CAN gateway located in the 2012 Tig? Was it behind the glove-box same as 2011?

Is DAS just the driver fatigue function - providing an alert when detecting erratic driving or does it include other features?

Are there any other options/hardware that is required to support the feature or is it just taking sensor inputs to work out if there is an issue?

Just trying to figure out if it's worth seeing if this can be retrofitted into a pre-2012 and if its worth investing in a new Gateway.

The critical component is the instrument panel. Transporter's daughter has one of the first face lifted Tiguans and that has a version 872C instrument panel and I am not even sure it will work with that. Transporter is looking into it at present.

The best way as I said in the OP is go into the adaption settings and see if "Pause Recommendation" works or not. I doubt it will work in the pre face lift models as I don't think DAS is even mentioned in the user's manual. At this stage I am not aware of any other additional functions these highline CAN Gateway modules do I suspect they would also support lane, sign and headlight assist. I have an Autoscan of a UK Tiguan that these features so I will revisit that in detail sometime soon.

CAN Gateway is in the same place as the 08-11 Tiguans and as far as I am aware no other hardware is required. In hindsight I find my other recent retrofit (OEM ATA siren) more useful at this stage and probably a better option for other Tiguan owners looking to do upgrades now that I have found a cheaper supplier.

I'm getting the upgraded Canbus soon, and let everyone know what additional features could be gained from the upgrade.

I'm going to investigate if this can be done on MY14 Amarok's (which now as of MY14 has the correct cluster) thanks to this thread. If it works, I'll post in the Amarok section with kudo's to you Bambazonke

Also, just for my info, how does DAS work?

Thank you It should work in the Amarok if it is listed as a feature in the owner's manual.

DAS monitors driver behaviour closely - noting any erratic steering wheel movements and lane deviations, for example - so it can judge the moment that you are starting to feel sleepy and need to stop. It also continually evaluates traffic signals on the road when you are driving at speeds of more than 60kmph and works out when it's time to take a break. If the system detects that you're starting to lose concentration it will alert you with a visual display on the dashboard and a warning sound. If you haven't taken a break within 15 minutes, the system will repeat the warning.

Not a listed feature in the owners manual.

I have however checked and my instrument panel, though very different part #, can do this:

Alternatively you can check if your instrument panel supports it by going into module17>adaption> and look for a function in the dropdown menu called "Pause Recommendation" By default this should be set to active if not try it and if it works then proceed to the next stage.

My Canbus is different as well and does not have the option to do Adaptation. So an upgrade may be necessary .....

would the canbus mentioned above (7N0 907 530 AN ) work in an Amarok is therefore the magic question .....

Transporter has ordered one for his daughter's Tig. I understand he has an Amarok as well maybe he could test it on the Amarok first and give us some feedback.

Sad to see this will be very interested to hear the outcome of this dispute. All the stuff I have bought from Mr Xu has really been well packaged with bubble wrap etc
I should think the courier is liable in this case. Is the PC board inside the casing damaged? Maybe you canabalize an old casing and use it after the dispute has been settled.

I am confused by this fault code 4.0! I do not know what that would mean? What's wrong? On the German forum I found that the possible connection is SW version of Steering Assist (#44) , it must be software version higher than 33XX, does anyone know anything about it or if someone works DAS to see which version of the software you have on Steering Assist #44?
This is my SW, and with that DAS not working...If this is a problem...
