Please suggest (2015 - 1.4 lit turbo supercharged Tiguan 118tsi with 6-speed DSG):
I am in the market looking for a mid-size SUV for my Dad and hence need a reliable car. Following is the shortlist (in preference order):
1. 2015 VW Tiguan (6 speed DSG 118TSI – 1.4lit Turbo supercharged) @ $29,990 drive away
2. 2015 Mazda CX-5 Maxx @ $33,000 drive away
3. 2015 Nissan QASHQAI ST @ $29,990 drive away
Though I really liked the way Tiguan drives and feel, I am just not sure about the reliability of the new 6-speed DSG (118tsi with 1.4 lit twin turbo)! I have heard and read a lot of bad experiences about the fancy “1.4 lit twin turbo” engine and of course about the recall. This is the only limiting factor.
Can you guys/experts please shed some light about the reliability of “6-speed dsg 118tsi with 1.4 twin turbo”?
I tried looking for this particular configuration but not much I could find so hoping you guys can help.

The 6 speed DSG is not a bad gearbox. It's the same DSG as used in the diesel Golfs as well as GTI and R. It's proven to be pretty reliable.

The twin-charger engine in the 118TSI however is something I wouldn't want to own outside warranty. It depends on how long your dad intends to keep the car but I'd be factoring in an extended warranty if you were looking at keeping the car more than 3 years.

Although I think these engines have got better, there is still a big enough question on the long term reliability hence why an extended warranty would be a necessity. You may be one of the many happy 118TSI owners that don't have any issues or you may be one of the unlucky ones and have the engine blow up on you. For me it's still too much of a gamble and I'm not convinced VW has totally fixed the issues with these engines. The failures are happening a lot less frequently but there are still cases where this has occurred with cars delivered after all the fixes have been done. VW may blame this on "dodgy fuel" but you don't want to be the one fighting the legal battle in-between the fuel company and VW as both have much deeper pockets that you.

If it was me I'd either go the Mazda (a bit boring but reliable) or for similar $ I'd get a demo/low km 132TSI (GTI engine and bullet-proof DSG from the Transporter/Audi TT-RS).

I would second that.
I drove both VW's and a Mazda when i was searching.. and you cant beat the 2.0Tsi and 7spd (especially when tuned) - phenomenal in comparison to a CX-5.

IMO:
Take a Tiguan 132 like above and add $3k for these two options:
APR - High Performance Development for Audi, VW and Porsche Vehicles.
DQ 500

And you've got a smacking 189kw punchy 7 Speed SUV, with the other VW comforts for <$35k
