OOPS!!! Coil packs the average mans 3rd world problems.

So I watched a youtube video on how to replace coil packs as my new reds with iridium spark plugs are 2 days away in the post.

Wait let me back up a bit… the 155 started stuttering when you apply a little more paddle. My wife has been driving it for the last 6 months and to my disgust I found out she ignored my request to only put 98 in the tank. Her thoughts were that there is no difference. So I filled it with 98 added some injector cleaner but the problem did not go away. My soon to be ex wife (just joking) then told me when she took it for a service the mechanic told her there is a problem on one of the cylinders and it will require work in the next 6 months, this info would have been handy three months ago. And so it came to be and I ordered replacement coils and spark plugs just to be sure.

Yesterday I had some free time on my hands and thought I would do a practice run and remove the coils and place the same ones back in. The process was very easy but when I tried to start the car afterwords it would not, all I got was a lowed “TIC-TIC-TIC” My wife (late with info as always) told me that the last couple of days the car got really bad with the stutter. This leads me to believe that more then one coil pack might be effected. The Tig is now dead in the water and my concern is that there might be more to the problem.

So I have come here to lay it out to the forum gurus, was it a dumb idea to remove the coil packs without the replacement parts, should I divorce my wife and what are the possibilities of a greater problem?

Go ahead you are allowed to laugh at me too.

safferbogun, I will be no help with your problem, but the Tig is a short-term distraction, while hopefully the wife is forever. Best of luck with it!

Sounds like you may have flattened the battery. Both my wife and I have done it to our 155TSI as the driving lights (low beam) have been set to "always on" when the key is in.

    I've since disabled the "feature".

^ this is what i was thinking. That tick tick tick noise is the sound of a battery with insufficient power to start the car. Get a battery charger or a jump start and try again.

Hi all, the parts arrived this morning and I decided to test with the new coil packs only.

When I turned her over to start she nearly did not make the turn but then brrroooommm, she came alive!

The test run shown that the coil packs did in dead fix the stutter. I think she struggle to start on a near dead battery while only on 3 cylinders.

Now to remove it all and replace the spark plugs.

Then off to Peninsula Autohaus to get the stage 1 ECU tune in the next couple of weeks!

    Thanks all for the information.
