The biggest fuel economy factor after the way you drive it with the Tig is the fact that it's got the aerodynamic efficiency of a brick. On the open highway the fuel consumption figures are subpar in my opinion. I average around 8.4-9l/100km (APR STG1) driving at 110km/h most of the time. I certainly don't recommend this, but as a test I followed a friend very closely on a 250km trip on the open highway, he has a big landcruiser. Anyway, I topped off when we arrived at the destination and I achieved an average consumption of 6.5l/100km. I know when you decrease drag your fuel efficiency improves, but by that much! I have a friend with a 2.0TSI Q3 and he gets about 7.0L/100km real world and it's heavier. This is the sort of figures you expect out of the Tig but it's just not shaped correctly to achieve those numbers.

Well today as an experiment I took the roof racks off and got 9.4 l/100 on a 600km trip just driving "normally". I don't think there's a big difference - perhaps a saving of 0.1-0.2 l/100 if you're lucky. Though the racks I have are pretty aero.
