    Noisy Steering

    Hey all

Curious to know if anyone out there with a 2012 build 132TSI has a noisy steering rack.

Mine seems to make some weird noises that are a bit hard to explain. Being an electonic power steering i would have thought it would be almost silent

Check that the coil springs (hope it has them) are not the culprits. The springs can cause a noise if they twist in the bases/cap.

Check it in a quiet place, lock to lock while stationary, if it's definitely making a grinding noise have it checked. My 2008 had the rack replaced quite early in the place because of that.

    When?
While driving, stationary, what speeds, are you braking when steering and you hear the noises?

In order to get the reliable reply, the one has to give a bit more informations.

Both our Tiguans (2010 and 2012) are quiet when steering under all conditions.

Its not the springs moving in the suspensions, thats more of a twang type noise whereas this is just a weird noise

I guess i notice it more when i am putting the car in the garage so at low speeds. I guess the sound has the ability to bounce off the wall so i would hear it more.

Its hard to explain but i guess i was more hoping that people could tell me if their steering operated perfectly silently or it was common for them to make some noise

Its due for service in a month so i will mention it to them then and see what they say. Its one of those things where if you tell them you know its a common problem then you have more chance of it being fixed

A couple of months back I was at a meeting in Chatswood. When I went to leave after the meeting, I tried to turn the wheels to drive out and it sounded like something was seriously wrong. Those on the footpath wondered why I was not driving out. It really sounded like something was stuck. All I could put it down to was being parked on a stormwater grate and the noise was the tyres turning on the grate.

I've also noted a noise when parking, or stopped, when the speed increase I can't notice it because of the exhaust I think... Is it something like this? Volkswagen tiguan 2010 rumore sterzo - YouTube

Mind you I was stopped on a classic parking floor with radio and ac off, so the only noise other than the steering wheel was the tyres "sliding" on the parking floor.

Read my post above, if you can only hear it in a quiet spot (I first heard mine in a carpark building) and not when moving at any speed then get it checked cos that's what mine was doing. The mechanics got under the car while I turned it lock to lock on a smooth concrete floor and they could hear the grinding from the rack. It isn't an issue for driving (it took 2 weeks for my new rack to arrive from Germany) but it does need to be fixed if that's the problem.

    Cheers

I will be getting them to check it out, dont worry about that.

If it wasnt for it being electric i would have just put it down to the power steering pump, but it obviously isnt the pump lol
