Wow! That's nice John, excellent work! A big improvement right there.
At the risk of starting another modding argument , this is just for those that have the AVC9000 (or equivalent) head unit (or thinking about getting one). There is now a simple app available that allows you to crack the file, replace the menus and then then reflash the head unit. You custom design your own interface in your favourite imaging software, and then away you go!
Here's a couple of examples that I've tweaked a bit, courtesy from some the guys over in the GTi forum (apologies for the quality, they look better in real life). The first pics is the standard menu's, the second is mine (just in case you weren't sure )

Hi Clip,
What is the build quality of the actual unit like? I have had something similar in an older car and while it worked and played all the things it said it would it "felt" cheap, ie the buttons clicked cheaply, there was lag from pressing the button to something happening, what is this unit like?
something else I hated was that it did not display the full name of the MP3 when it was playing music, it said things like britney~1.mp3 or something like that (but I would never admit to listening to Britney ), does this one do the same?
Guess what I am trying to say is that it felt like I was using a $300 unit from China rather than a $1500 Alpine unit and was just wondering what standard this unit was made to, cheers.
How much did that setup cost (including fitment) John? I'm quite keen on it seeing what you have achieved. It looks really good.
Want to share that update file to those that want to go the AVC9000 route?

would be interested in this... have the unit in my jetta and would like to change the way some of the menus look.
what is the software that you use to create the new menus?

Is the unit you have similar or the same as this one on ebay?

Paragon:
All the buttons and dials light up in red, so it matches the Tig. They work and feel exactly as a button should, as do the dials (but I never much use the buttons or dials anyway, as most things I control from the screen or from the steering wheel controls). As for taking time when switching between menus, it responds immediately.
Unfortunately Paragon, the tag reading from mp3's is the same, mind you, it depends on how your tracks are tagged, so you can change that to get it reading the info you want, but who wants to do that? It is an issue though, as is the GUI for the iPod - which is awful. But I generally use the USB, a DVD loaded with mp3's, or the SD card on the SatNav console.
The unit looks like this:

I paid $950, delivered. It's plug and play for the Tig. I fitted it myself (takes all of 30min max (excluding camera setup), halve that if you've done it before. Could not be simpler.

the software is SunPlus Edit. It's a "donation" of 3 Euros to register - but you do have to register otherwise you can't save your changes.
Looks great installed John, only thing I'm concerned about with these is the lack of RCA outputs, only 1 I think you said? I'd like to run at least front splits and a rear sub so maybe not the unit for me unless theres another way around it?

easy way around that mate. Just use line level converters (there is a really high end one that guys are using instead of the RCA outputs).
But you don't even have to do that. At the moment I'm running a high power Alpine 4 channel amp. I run the RCA from the head unit to the amp, but at the amp end, I use a splitter that allows you to run another set of rca's to the other 2 channels in the amp - bridging these two channels to then run the Sub. So the one amp runs the front splits and the sub. This leaves the rear speakers left hooked up to the head unit and un-amped, but this still gives a bit of fill to the sound, and if I use the fader on the head unit, I can drop the volume of the front splits and the sub and just run the rears.
If you wanted to amp the front and rear speakers and run a sub, all you'd have to do is run the front and rear speakers using the RCA out and the jumpered 4 channel amp. Then run a second mono amp using the rear speaker line outs from the head unit and a line level converter. This would then let you control the sub volume using the fader on the head unit.
Or, you could leave the front and sub setup to the 4 channel amp, but run another amp that's hooked up using the rear speaker out (and the line level converter). This would give you all speakers amped, and the fader would control between front speakers +sub, and rear speakers.
Or you could reverse that, and have the rear speakers and sub together, and the fronts on their own - fading between the fronts, and rear + sub.
