Plenty of people keep them in the glovebox or somewhere in the car...

Google RNS-510 and Lithuania, there has been plenty of discussion on this. Or:

If there are legit RNS-510s selling for ~$1k they are very rare, most cases you have to expect over $1.5k.

Legitimacy of the seller aside though, you do have a genuine unit regardless so I'm sure some RNS guru can help you if you have any issues.

From the first post, did you have an RCD-300 before the RNS install? If so did you get an upgraded CANBUS gateway?

So the adaptor from the head unit only fits in one half.
Maybe the keying is wrong , or the adaptor is wrong or the wiring enters the dual socket wrong.... Dunno.
But the symptoms remain; no AM and only ok FM.
i shall attempt a swap and report back.
It's different with the ANS, I have some antennas with the dual plug and they make no difference to reception. As I explained before for dual fakra the second connector is an alternative antenna for FM only, it won't help AM... Incidentally that is why if you get the dual fakra connection the other way around, you get crackly FM and no AM. But you're welcome to try for yourself

Maybe he has to do what the Audi guys do & retrofit the old antenna system?

Didn't need to because all Tiguans have the upgraded gateway. It was the RCD-300 in there before (2nd gen unit) that;s why the aerial plugs are different.

Yeah I think the problem whiskywallah has is that the "keying" of the connector to his ANS unit only allows it to go in the "wrong" way, giving no AM reception --- so it is using the FM booster antenna and not the main roof antenna.

Hmm, I have helped with an install for a mk6 Golf and the one that fits the single antenna adapter is the correct antenna. So unless VW decided to swap them around for the Tiguan for sh*ts and giggles... which I wouldn't put past them

I had the antenna in the right plug, so keying is correct.
So i get next to no AM in Sydney and FM is average.

I can also confirm best easily reachable place for GPS antenna in MY12 Tig is stuck to top of head unit.
Tiguan MY12 118TSI, white, no frills..... Had ANS810 ... Note the HAD ..... Now got RCD510 supplemented by 7" Android TomTom mounted on a HoldMyPhone .... Upgraded speakers Vibe BlackAir front splits and MBQuartz 12" ported sub driven from Infinity Reference 5350a amp .... oh and added fun

I would try it with 1 antenna only & vica versa for each antenna plug in the back of the unit. Failing that I would try the booster.

    I think you'll find that's exactly what I did.
The ANS 810 has one antenna input and a short adaptor cable to allow a Fakra plug to be used.
The first half of the dual Fakra plug in the car is the one that fits the adaptor from the back of the ANS.
It gives OK FM and only the faintest glimmer of AM on 576kHz.

I modified the adaptor and tried the other half of the dual Fakra.
It gave zero FM or AM.
Switching back put me back to square 1.

So I don't know where the 2 antenna cables come from; I presume one goes to the shark in and the other to the heated rear window.
If I can find a reasonably priced antenna booster I might try it or I might just wait for a DAB+ module to appear.

If you are looking face-on at the dual-fakra connector from the car, the left side goes to rear window (FM only) and the right side goes to roof (AM+FM)

I still think you need to do what the Audi guys do.
Poor FM & next to zero AM is the exact same symptoms they get when they fit the RNSe unit.
In a nutshell, the unit itself doesnt work with the 2 antennas connected, the arial system needs to be changed to one that suits the new unit.
Just about every Audi forum I read has people doing it.. do some reading on RNSE retrofits, probably not the answer you want, the issues you are experiencing are the same though, you may find it helps.

UPDATE: I bought the antenna adapter, and tried to put the original car SMA plugs (without the plastic bits because I snapped them off) into the adapter's dual-fakra plastic case. Result = fail. The metal SMA plugs in the car are a difference shape and don't fit in the adapter's white plastic dual-FAKRA housing. Because using the adapter would cause a considerable loss of signal from the aerial, (by adding further interconnects, each extra connection causes reflection of signal and up to 3dB signal loss) I decided to just shove the SMA plugs into the back of the RNS510 without their little plastic cases. They hold securely enough: the SMA connectors are pretty good by themselves, not sure why the extra FAKRA plastic surround is needed in the first place......
