MFD error - check deadlock, pls refer to owner's manual/Leaving Home lights

    Dear all,

Hope someone can assist before I log a fault. My car has only done 784km's so far.

1). Whenever I turn the key to off, I see a message in the MFD stating to the effect "Check deadlock, please refer to owner's manual"? It was there when I took delivery of the car on May 11. I've referred to the owner's manual and cannot for the life of me find this error. What does this mean? I phoned the Sales Exec over the phone and he stated that this was normal?!? Can someone please confirm?

2). In MFD, you have the option to set Coming Home and Leaving Home. Both are ticked. I've set both to 30secs.

Scenario (1): When coming home to the car, the LED daylights and Xenon headlights turn on by clicking on the unlock remote key. They stay on for 30 secs in the evenings only. [CHECK]

Scenario (2): I press lock on the remote and walk away from the car. Isn't the LEDs and Xenon HID's supposed to remain on for 30 secs? This is also when I leave the car of an evening in the drive way. I thought the whole idea of this Leaving Home functionality was for safety so that the immediate vicinity was lit up by the headlights. I've seen this in effect on Mercs. The fact that leaving home doesn't work, is this a defect or is this normal? Again, I referred to the manual and it definitely states it's meant to stay on based on the time you've set in the MFD. [??]

Thanks fellow V- Dubbers for your advice so far!

The 'Check deadlock' message is informing you that the vehicle may lock itself once you've removed the keys, and closed the doors.

As for the 'Coming home' function ("Home" refers to where you parked the car, not the car itself. So effectively, Coming home is getting out, Leaving home is getting in.), have you tried leaving the car unlocked for the duration of the 30secs?

If my memory serves me correct, the lights will go out, as soon as you lock the car. Inversely, they will come on when you unlock it.

Ok thanks for that. That makes sense

Yes, I've left the car unlocked. It's parked inside the garage. So if Leaving Home is getting "into" the car - i.e press the unlock of the remote, the headlights do turn "ON" of an evening for up to 30 secs.

Headlights and DRL's turn off the moment I take the key out of the ignition. Yes, the lights come on the moment I unlock.

May be dependant on where you've set the headlight switch.

Like most things with a bombardment of settings and options, you may have to play around with everything until you get it all working the way you want. Bare in mind, at some point, you'll have to come to some sort of compromise.

Flick your high beams just before you get out of the car to activate 'Coming Home'.

If you have access to VCDS you can program the car so that it happens every time you get out of the car (at night) without having to flick the high beams.

Exactly right. I didnt know the VCDS can do that, I'm going to have to buy it now because it's my pet hate that the lights don't stay on.

Setting is shown at Bit 2:

Bit 0 ticked means the lights go off when you stop the car, and then turn on when you open the drivers door, and the 30 seconds starts counting now. More useful if you don't get out of the car immediately.

Thanks for the advice. There's no mention of this in the user manual. I'll give it a go tonight

When I open the driver's door, the headlights are off, but the interior lights turn on. Is the "Coming Home" feature supposed to turn on the headlights for the 30 sec duration? On my mate's Golf 2010 TSI, the headlights do turn on when he opens his door (he has the stock standard halogen headlights), but on mine (HID), the headlights do not turn on at all. In any case, maybe it's a good thing as I can only imagine having a Xenon bulb turn on and off isn't good for the ballast and the life of the bulb.

I have halogens. Headlights turn on when the door opens and lasts for 30 seconds (that's a setting I changed in VCDS though).

I think the interior lights turn on when the car turns off or when I remove the key from ignition, can't remember.

The warning message about checking locking depends on how many times you press the lock button on the remote.

1 x - doors are deadlocked. Can't open them from inside. If someone smashes the window they still can't open the door.

2 x - doors are locked from the outside but can be opened from the inside. Useful if you have the kids in the car at the servo.

3 x - you pressed the button 1 x too many. Who knows what it does
