MDI and iPhone 4 - not working

Plugged my new iPhone 4 into the MDI cable today using the white cable supplied with the iPhone and I get a message saying the device is not recognised. What's the go there? Am I doing something wrong?

yeah i get the message 'this device is not optimised' or something along those lines, I guess the recent MDI update may fix that issue but I was provided with a iphone and usb cable so I just went with a USB stick and never bothered to investigate, but yes its not only you..

    also see

"•The MDI interface with my iPhone -- always says it's "not optimised for this device" and will often confuse track titles or not play the first few seconds of the track. "

and found this on another forum

"This warning is normal, just disregard it, it just means that VW didn't pay Apple bags full of money for certification (rubber stamp)

I get the same message on my iPhone 4 when using in my car. "

I can't play anything though. The music comes out of the iPhone rather than the speakers. I wish I could ignore it but it just doesn't do anything. We paid for the MDI on the salesman advice it was designed for the iPhone\iPod.

    Hi,
you can't use the standard USB-iPod cable. You need to buy the MDI-iPod adapter cable - and even then, good luck! (see my topic re RNS510, iPod skipping in the audio section of the forum). I thought the USB-iPod cable should work, too - because it does with other head units (Pioneer etc) in other cars.

The "genuine" MDI-iPod cable is about $90, but you can get it "online" for around $30...

    regards,
    John

I'm thinking of buying one of these for my Golf. Do you have the seller name that you bought yours through?
    Thanks, Nic.

I was provided with a genuine one (usb x1 and ipod/iphone x1) on sale and still had that message.

That's pretty disappointing considering I paid an extra $400 for the MDI and they can't even supply a cable that works with the device they showcased (iPod) during the salesman's sales pitch.

I personally refuse to consider ANYTHING with a lower case 'i' in front of it..... Sony Walkman MP3 is great, HTC Desire does more than i'll ever need, Toshiba laptop at home, will definately consider their tablet later in the year before any 'i' related product..... :associated unapproving emoticon: ...

I'm the opposite - got rid of the Desire (good riddance!), the Walkman was ok in its day, and nothing with Windows lives in our house. Once you've gone to Mac, you'll never look back! Even converted my parents and wife to Mac - now that's saying something!

But back to the MDI problem - who can positively say they have a cable and it works? If so, where did you get it from?

Does it charge the iPhone while plugged in?
