Looking at buying a Tig

Hi,
Just doing some research. Looking at buying a Tig and was hoping to see what people thought / any issues they have

Trying to decide between the subie xv and the tiguan

Are you looking at new cars or used?

VW are running out the MY14 cars to make way for MY15 at the moment so you can get some reasonable deals on current stock.

I don't believe there is going to be major change for MY15 (in terms of shape), however there will be some spec changes and possibly a new diesel engine available locally.

Let us know what you're looking at/what you intend to use it for and we'll hopefully be able to give you some pointers to consider in making your decision.

probably new or very close to new.

tossing up between the 132 and 155 petrol.

i currently have a subaru impreza (00 model ... i know.. old. but its got guts and handles well and i love it)

basically need all wheel drive so i dont have to fit chains at the snow and im used to awd for driving in the wet, and if i went to 2wd id probably die. (I drove a rental getz for a week and thought i was going to die. Never been so scared! No wonder people drive like nannas! (It was also probably the crappy rental tyres))

i need decent boot space as well to fit boxes in the back I pick up from suppliers so any sedan is out

it cant be too high. im about 163 cm and need to be able to put bikes on the roof. > i will do a test drive this week and will have to check the roof height. but for more power id be willing to buy a step ladder.
i also dont want it too high so that when you are cornering it handles better and the tig seems to be a decent compromise

it must be zippy.
(id love the golf r but cant justify the price... well i can justify it.... but i dont think the bank will!)

OK. First thing is boot space. This is not one of the Tiguans strongest points. It is on the smaller side though I also use my car for work and manage to fit everything in. Like most cars the rear seats fold down and I'll often do this and throw the bike in the back. It's a bit of a hassle removing the kids seats but in reality it only takes a couple of minutes.

I understand exactly what you're saying with AWD. Previous to the Tig I had a Honda Accord and driving down dirt roads was a white knuckle experience... and that's only driving at 60km/hr as I didn't dare go any faster. With the Tig it feels planted at 100km/hr on the dirt and given I do a bit of dirt road driving it's a definite "must have" for any future car.

If height is a problem you can always lower the car too. Springs are readily available and you can do this without changing shocks if you don't go overboard. You can drop it about 35mm which doesn't sound a lot but does make a difference to roof access (as well as improve ride/handling). Though given I'm 6'5" I have different issues as head clearance and rear legroom often kill off vehicle options - no Golf R for me either

Interior-wise the Tiguan is a nice place to sit. Though there haven't been any major upgrades to the cabin since it first came to market. There's obviously been updates to the aircon controls/radio etc but we're still waiting on the Mk7 Golf interior to be brought over to the Tiguan. I don't think this will happen in the MY15 update - will have to wait for a major model change (new platform) before you'll see new interior trims.

Zippy is what the Tiguan does very well. If you don't like how much standard "zip" the Tig has, there are aftermarket tuners who will give you up to 50% more zip for $1,000-$2,000. Underneath the petrol Tiguan is the GTI motor, Golf R drivetrain and gearbox from TT-RS. Next months Motor magazine will be one hot Tiguan - check it out here:



Depending on when you're looking to upgrade, MY15 Tiguan will be out in the next couple of months (usually around September). So you'll be able to pick up MY14 cars getting run out at the moment or wait for MY15 if you want the latest model. There's not a huge difference between the 132 and 155 - same engine just different tune. Both have same torque but peak power output in the 132 has been clamped. The only thing you'll get is some chrome trims and upgraded seats in the 155. At the moment it will be down to availability of stock in what colour/options you want if you're after MY14 as what stock is in the country is what you can buy.

In MY15 there is quite possibly going to be a new engine (130TDI - same as in the Passat) which is available in other markets but has only recently gone through compliancing into Australia. This may also be a good option if you want economy as well as a bit of performance.

i havent seen too any threads on the 155. most people seem to have bought the tdi which i found suprising.

Ill need it in the next few weeks / month. (my subie is dying at a rapidly increasing rate!)

The boot space is actually bigger than the xv!

Ill do some test driving at my local dealers and see what theyve got.

Leaked pictures of the my15 dont look too attractive and for the price hike i think hardly worth it. I hope it doesnt get the golf inside after just reading about the ipod issues!

My friend chipped thier gti, and i hadnt considered it with a tiguan. sounds like it could be fun!

Yes the tuned Tiguan can do 0-100 in under 6 sec. There a few of us running mid to low 5's. The one in Motor mag may be in the 3's but will have to wait for next months issue to find out!

ive owned a xvs 13 model and as a small hatch it was ok. i traded it only a yr later as was just to small to travel . i only just got into the tig last month and so far find it a better ride on and off road and much better quailtiy . i would of rathered i spend the extra to start with and brought tig new when i had the money i spent on the xv. as for off road , the tig does lift or scrape as much as the xv did . i also had issues with the dealer on warranty issues on gps and a few other probs .

i never thought of modding a car (and i personally wouldnt do it) but it makes me want to mod it to make it go faster! maybe just start with a chip. although reading the flappy paddles thread makes me want those too!

Hmmm Underneath the petrol Tiguan is the GTI motor, Golf R drivetrain and gearbox from TT-RS. Excuse my ignorance but I understand GTI motor and the concept of Golf R drivetrain..... but gearbox from TT-RS? What's special about gearbox from TT-RS?? Is it DSG? and excempt from DSG issues like other VW DSG's?

Yes I had no intention of modding my Tig either until I came on here.... damn forums

The great thing about the Tiguan is that it is based on the Mk6 Golf and there are a lot of parts available for these that are direct bolt-on items. Things like steering wheels, stereos/sat nav, engines, etc. Obviously there are some differences but 70% of the parts are Golf based.

The Tiguan in that video had a turbo upgrade (installed same turbo as Golf R) so that's a bit more done than a chip, however you can get some decent power upgrades just from a chip (189kW).

They get off the line pretty well - that's due to having launch control as standard. My question is why would you put launch control in a car if you didn't intend people to use it? Though I seriously doubt many do use the feature.

Anyway the good thing with the Tiguan is that you can have a car that is practical with benefits of an SUV without sacrificing on performance.
