Installation of LHD electric drivers seat as passenger seat in RHD.

    Hi Guys,

My parents just bought a 2013 Tiguan and want to get a LHD Drivers seat for the passenger seat.
    Would this pose any problems?

Could I assume that the airbag wiring would all be the same and this would not cause an error? I know there may be some wiring needed as the wiring harness may not be there for the seats power, but hoping that it will not be overly difficult.

If anyone could shed any light I would be grateful.

    Thanks,

    Jim

I am not sure i understand.
So they bought it with the electric leather seats but want to swap out the front passenger seat with a drivers seat from a LHD equivalent (say US model).

If so, I think that is going to be really really expensive.

    It's for the extra adjustment.

It's possible, but you'd need to have a parts guy on side to cross-match everything.

Installation of LHD electric drivers seat as passenger seat in RHD.

First question is why? Is this just for electric seat on the passenger side?

Second is how much do they expect it to cost? I can imagine that freight on a large part like a seat is not going to be cheap. Let alone the cost of the seat.

Now for the practical considerations... I reckon it should bolt in OK. Check the airbag connectors on your patents car to make sure LHS and RHS match and you should be reasonably confident that it's plug and play. As for wiring the electrics I'd be looking at the connector on the drivers side to see what is involved. I don't have electric seats so best to ask someone that has.

I wouldn't be surprised if the cost of doing this properly was around $2k if you were going to import your own leather electric seat and get it fitted.

It would probably only be something I'd consider if my seat was totally stuffed for some reason and needed to be replaced.

The other thing would be to find out if you can retrofit the mechanism. This would keep cost down but may introduce other problems.

Strange as my electric seats have same amount of adjustment on both. Only difference is the passengers doesn't have the 3 memory buttons.

    Maybe the tigs are different

The other issue is that they use "leatherette" in the States don't they rather than the real stuff ? so there's no guarantee the seats will even match. All that for a passenger seat that I don't think has been adjusted once on my Tiguan !!!

The US Seat in the SEL is a different design, it's the same as the cloth seat here but with leather, there is also a cheaper leatherette alternative. They don't get the same "sports" (not really sporty at all) seats that AU gets.

If you find a seat from an EU model then it should just be Plug and Play.

The downside is that you will loose the underseat storage and the ability to fold it flat. Not worth it IMO.

i think the costs will far outweigh the benefits.

in my Tiguan, because the car is my wife's daily to from work, but I get to drive it at other times, the driver seat electrical adjustments are handy and probably gives more adjustments than the manual adjuster version (but not as handy as having driver seat memory buttons 1,2 & 3 as in her previous car).

the passenger seat.. it rarely gets adjusted except moving forward and backward to carry stuffs on the floor.

Strange as it may seem (not sure why no one picked it up) - the airbag would be on the inside of the seat, protecting you from maybe flying lipstick, or coins instead of the threat from the outside of the vehicle where it should be protecting you.

Bit left field I know, but i'll just put that out there. It would probably clobber the driver as well

Not if you mount the seat backwards guy

Very valid point. I guess it would still plug in, but you might jam your hands trying to control it.

But seriously, I think he wants to import a seat, not use another RHD drivers seat. You'd have to import an EU drivers seat from a LHD car and use it as a passenger seat.
