How to remove rear seat cushions

Is there an easy way to remove the rear seat cushions?
I have seen a couple of posts that say just pull up the front edge and push back on the cushion and it will release. Haven't managed to do that. Perhaps the design has changed.

I would like a little more room in the back when we go camping as it is rather tight getting everything in and the rear seats are not used. Just need a little more space not much.
There is a suggestion in the handbook to remove the spare tyre and take out all the foam. The tyre could be stowed behind the front seats to make more room. Has anyone tried this and do they find it helpful.
May be better to buy one of those roof mounted storage units.

Took out the tyre and foam blocks and secured the tyre to the rear seat backs. Can get the heavier gear down lower, should work okay. Still like to remove the rear seat cushions.
