Yes dodgy.
I would sit tight and ask for the exact spec you've listed on a brand new car.
After all that is what the dealer has signed the contract saying they are going to deliver to you.
The contract works both ways
I'm sure they'd be mighty upset if you told them now that you were only going to pay them $40k (actually I'd go up to $41k on a 300km demo but I'm a hard negotiator).
And don't tell me that they can't find a car in the same colour with leather and a sunroof - tell them that you're happy to wait.
A new car "should" have under 20km on it - even if they have taken a prospective customer for a short drive in it.
Yes totally dodgy and the sales guy should be ashamed of trying to fob off a demo as new. Yes technically it may not have been registered and only driven with trade plates but it certainly has been "used" by the dealer. 300km is Sydney to Canberra - or maybe it got driven the other way now that the car is in Sydney...
The question I'd be asking the manager would be:
"If another dealer wanted to swap an identical spec car in different colour with your stock would you accept a car with 300km on it for one with 10km?"
I can guarantee you the answer would be certainly not.
I'd also check the build/compliance date of the car they're trying to fob you to see if it is a 2012 or 2013 build - check your contract to see if this has been specified.
If the dealer won't honour their contract I would ask them to refund your deposit and go somewhere else. Now you know what that spec car is worth you should be able to get that price or better somewhere else.
If they're trying to do the dodgy on you with this, what else are they going to dodgy - sell you a car that has already been to the panel shop?
If you don't get any satisfaction from the sales manager, then ring back and ask to speak to the dealer principal. Nothing hurts a business more than unhappy customers who talk (on forums
)and these guys know it's their brand that they are trying to grow/maintain (not just make sales).
Good luck and let us know how you get on.
