If you drive mainly short trips, the battery will have low capacity most of the time and it will shorten its life. Charging the battery to full capacity every 2months or so, using a smart charger like CTEK, may extend the battery life. I expect to get at least 4 years out of the battery.

Original Jetta Battery is 7+ years old and still going strong although it is used mainly around town and used on short trips…

My Mums Barina is 12+ and used similarly - still on the original too but I think it is on the way out…

    Thanks.
Interesting as mine looked completely different.
First of all, it fully filled the battery box (side to side in all directions) and it had no text, no brand on it (yours is Varta), plus my battery connections were painted blue. Yours looks like it had been already replaced.

Just to add to this, the original VARTA battery in my 2008 Tiguan TDI was getting slow to start the car the last few months, only when the car hadn't been started for a few days (well it is still pretty good for 6 years+ !!) so I called VW, they suggested a replacement original VARTA in DIN55-HIGH size for $250.

HOWEVER as you can see in the photo above, the battery tray actually accommodates a DIN66-HIGH sized battery, so I got one of those instead, $250 for original VARTA made in Germany from EveryBattery in Melbourne. It fits perfectly. The battery part number is VARTA E44 and the dimensions are L 278 x W 175 x H 190. Whereas the original battery is only 242mm long

Mine's the same age as team_v's.

I read on one of these forums that unless you lock your car, some systems will still use a small amount of power & eventually flatten your battery. I haven't seen any evidence of this as i usually leave my car unlocked (in a garage), sometimes unused Monday to Friday.
