How to hard wire dash mount GPS?

I am going to hard wire the aftermarket GPS into the Tig, as the cable is always in the way.
How do you remove the lower part of the console!
I thought I might run it from the back of the cig lighter.

    What have others done?
    Dave.

Cut the wires of the plug and use the power and earth to the fuse board spare outlets and bolt the earth up.

DONT CUT THE PLUG OFF EVER AS MOST GPS UNITS ARE 5 Volt

Buy one of these from Jaycar and put it in a spare ACC ONLY fuse socket. When you are testing turn ign on and with meter in each socket turn the key off If power goes off thats the one you want.

They come in standard and mini sizes so find a socket and buy the right size one 10amp is the lowest

You will have to meter each one to find the right one but reasonably easy to do. Put the pictured fuse in with the wired end down and hook the power wire to it.

One word of warning here Are you sure your GPS works on 12V mine has a Stepdown in the ciggy plug and is only 5 V

Buy one of these also and just plug the ciggy plug into it.. 12 v will kill the GPS

Solder the wire from the fuse to the centre connector and the earth to the tab on the edge

Crimp a ring onto the earth wire and attach it under a bolt under the dash that gives a good earth.

If you cant solder Jaycar sell one with wire attached like this and just cut the socket end off with about 400mm of wire. Then you can still use the plug on the other end later for something else maybe

Thats how I wire my dashcams in

I actually bought a cigarette lighter socket and attached it under the dash and wired it direct to the fuse board with a inline fuse . comes on with the ignition

Exactly what I said in previous post but with instructions on how to do it in case he doesnt know.

A bit of a worry when some advise cutting the plug off and hooking it to 12 v when it runs on 5.

Hopefully you used a fuse like pictured and didnt just jam a wire down the side of another fuse. A recipe for a future disaster.

You dont usually need an extra fuse as the plug from the GPS mostly has a 2 or 3 amp one in them.

Addition of extra circuits to the Volkswagen Golf / Jetta / Passat / EOS / Scirocco / Rabbit fuse box | my-gti.com

I'm about to install my dashcam and an additional 2xUSB power socket following this guide. I've done it on previous cars. No need for additional inline fuses because the circuit is fused in the same way the standard ones are.

Well a lot of work to do that when with the fuse I pictured it just slides into a spare socket of which there is quite a few. If you put the fuse in with the wire down it acts as a fuse as normal and you can connect what you like to it. I have two in my car and if and when I sell it can be removed as if it was never there. Have done several cars like that with dashcams and have had no trouble for 3 years with them.

Works for me and I like it tidy and dont like cutting or drilling holes.

Have all the cables behind trim and cant see any of them Heres the pics of fuses and my old camera

I too like a tidy install, hence following the above method. If worse came to worse I would use an actual fuse tap but the extra USB charging ports will more than likely stay in the car when it goes (total of about $9 worth of material so definitely not worth removing).

I guess it comes down to how 'properly' you like things done. For me, nothing short of factory-ish will do
