Help Light switch removal from facia

    Hi all
Has anybody managed to remove the above mentioned part. I have bought a chrome one and tried this morning to remove the original one. Removed the side panel and removed 3 torx screws there and another 3 from the lower facia panel around the fuse box and one immediately below the instrument binnacle in an attempt to remove the panel in which the switch is mounted. Also removed the air duct incase there was a screw there holding it but there was nothing.

It appears there is a screw directly behind the switch holding the panel to the body which means the switch may come out from the front, tried rotating it anti clockwise as new switch has 2 spring loaded extruding pins that push inwards when rotated in one direction. Too scared to use brute force incase I break something. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

If you've got the new switch there, it shows how it's retained. Basically, you've got to release the two tabs on the switch itself.

You'll probably need a strategically-bent piece of caot hanger wire, or similar to depress the tabs. Unfortuantely, due to the lack of foresight by the engineers and accountants that designed the setup, the tabs are only accessed from the back side of the panel the switch assembly sits in. One is at the bottom, and the other is at the top, or thereabouts.

I tried that Umai accessing the pins from the side are near impossible as the switch enclosure has a plastic layer on the sides of the switch, only the rear of the switch is partly exposed to allow the wire plug to be connected to it. The only way I can see it coming out is by using a set of feeler gauges to slide down the outer edge of the switch from the front and push the pins in from the side if you know what I mean.

    Update

Just done a google of the issue and came up with this on one golf forum....

1.Turn the headlight switch to the off position.

2.Push the switch in towards the dashboard. The switch will go in anywhere from 3/16-inch to 1/4-inch. The headlight switch has two parts, the inner switch that allows you to choose on/ off and the outer right that sits in place into the dashboard. The center ring will be the part that pushes in.

3.Twist the switch clockwise until it stops. This will unlock the switch from the dashboard.

4.Pull the headlight switch straight out of its slot.

5.Line up the new headlight switch with the slot in the dashboard.

6.Slide the switch into the slot, then twist it counter-clockwise until it locks in place.

    7.Test the headlight switch.

I have now successfully installed the new light switch which has the "Auto" option and activated the Coming/Leaving Home options in the central locking Module 09 using VCDS with no issues.

    Have a look at this:
Removing and installing light switch -E1-
The following components are integrated into the light switch -E1-:
    t Fog light switch -E7-
t Rear fog light switch -E18-
t Bulb for illumination of light switch -L9-
    Removing:
    – Switch off ignition and all electrical loads, and pull out ignition key.
    – Turn rotary grip part of light switch to „0“.

    – Press in rotary grip of of light switch -arrow 1- and turn slightly to right -arrow 2-.
    – Hold rotary grip in this position and pull light switch out of dash panel by rotary grip -arrow 3-.

    – Release connector -arrow- and pull off.
    Installing:
    – Attach connector to light switch.

    – Hold light switch and press rotary knob of light switch firmly inwards -1- and turn slightly clockwise -arrow 2-.
    – Hold rotary knob in this position and insert light switch in dash panel.
    – Turn rotary grip to „0“ position, release and engage switch.

Unfortunately I cannot attach the diagrams to this forum page, but if you follow the instructions you should be OK. It is rather simple, no hidden tabs, etc., but if you do need pictures send me your email address.
    Good Luck.
