Gearbox Issues??

Hi All

I a newbie to this forum but have been looking around for quite sometime. I do apologised for not signing up earlier but I really hope someone with the expertise can lessen my worries on the problem that I have this morning.

My 125TSI Tig has done only about 2500kms. This morning when I engaged to "R", there was like a "clunk" noise and the car shook/vibrated a little. I put it back to "P" and then back to "R" again and same thing happened. Despite that, I continued to drive it.

As I was driving it, I saw that the top right hand corner of the MFD wasn't displaying the gear selection. I stopped by the roadside after a few kms and turned the ignition off and pull out the key. I then inserted the key and started the engine and when I engaged to "R", there was no "clunk" and vibration/shaking this time. The gear selection on the MFD was showing as well.

I have noticed that when I engaged to "R", sometimes there is a very slight "clunk". It just feels like its tight to engage.

Just wondering does anyone knows why this happens? I did searched the forum and saw that Arctra had issues with the gearbox before. I am just not sure if its similar problems???

Haven't seen anything on vortex about it so it is unlikely to be a common fault.

Could be how you parked the car? I've always had the odd clunk in auto gearboxes but it was generally related to how i parked. Usually this happened when parked on a slope. I always assumed the gears may not have been correctly aligned because the car slightly shifts between putting into park and chucking on the park brake?

the car was parked in the garage overnight and the ground is flat. anyway, i only had that weird clunk yesterday morning. till now, it has been good. i hope its alright now.

I wish I could share some insight here mate, but all I can go with is a loose unserstanding of what happened. As far as I understand, for some reason the gearbox control unit lost sync/connection with the main ECU (Engine Control Unit). This made for the horrible crunch as I "slipped" the gear shifter into "D", and triggered what is known as "Limp Mode" which is the vehicles way of protecting itself. That's when all the lights on the MFD lit up and I couldn't change gear.

Now, the vehicle can recover itself from this Limp Mode if the same error does not occur again after a few restarts. So, after I had turned off and restarted a few times trying to figure out what the hell was going on, itobviously realised the control units were all talking again so it kicked out of Limp Mode and allowed the gearbox to change gears again. After a few more starts it then let the MFD go back to operating correctly without all the lights being on.

I have not had the problem re-occur since that very unpleasant weekend, but I have noticed on occassion there is a little bit of strain on the gearbox when engaging drive just after starting the engine up. It's like the force from the engine coming through the the automatic transmission a little too quickly, so the gearbox offers some resistance (if that makes sense). Other times it slips into gear nice and smoothly.

The dealer could offer no explanation - well, nothing concrete anyway. If you have access to a Vagcom cable perhaps you should do a quick scan to see what error codes it pops up. Otherwise, take it to the dealer to check out just so that the problem is officially "on the record" so that if the perverbial hits the fan later, you stand a better chance of making a warrenty claim.

Keep us posted mate. You are now only the 2nd person other than myself to report this problem to my knowledge. The only other one was someone on the MyTiguan forums in the UK that had a problem. This is one small club you really don't want to be a member of, and I hope our Tig's are not the canaries in the mineshaft signalling problems for all Tigs!

I rang up Highway VW and brought my car in for them to have a look this arvo.

the guy scanned and found a malfunction with the Transmission Control Module Sporadic. They have resetted the computer and ensure the software was the latest one which it is. They didn't know what caused it and told me to monitor it. He was saying if it happens again, I'll have to bring the car in and leave it there for few hours for them to work on. Hmmmmm......

Anyway, does anyone has more explanation regarding this fault? I should have ask for a copy of that scan!!! Bugger
