    Front brake replacement

    Hi All,

I just got my Tig serviced with a Dealer in Melbourne and was told that my front break pads have about ~3mm left. The dealer quoted me $705 fitted. Interestingly he quoted to replace the disks and pads. My questions are:

    1) Can I just change the pad only and not the dics?
    2) Is $705 over the top? How much should I be reasonably paying?
    3) Any suggestions for alternative to dealers?

    Thanks in advance!

    Cheers,
    XTX

Generally change both discs and pads at the same time. It'll work out cheaper in the long run in terms of labour and brake fluid etc.

3mm left is still quite a few km depending on how much you travel. Personally I'd run it down a bit more before changing but that's only because I like to get all the value out of them.

I'd shop around with some independents. Dealers are always going to be more expensive. Also you may look at going with some ceramic pads to reduce brake dust - you'll have more options if you go independent. Dealers will just fit up the OEM part.

Thanks Tigger for quick response. I don't travel much, mainly around Melbourne. Any recommendation on brand and types from independent?

    Cheers,

Sorry not from Vic so can't recommend anywhere from personal experience. I'd check this forum area and see others suggestions: Recommended Repairers and Parts Suppliers

I got mine done at volksworks but that was part of a brake upgrade

Any good aftermarket brake shop should be able to help you so shop around

The ceramic brake pads are more expensive than stock but last much longer so cost works out even over the long run

As for rotors you can go stock again or aftermarket up to you and what you want to pay just remember that the crossdrilled/vented rotors like the db2 /db3/db4 wont do anything for the braking experience they are just there to look good
so if your not showing them off just go for plain blank ones

The slotted rotors have their purpose, but they cost more than STD ones.
