Just a minor point: BMWs involvement was in the mid-life update on the original Freelander - when the V6 (Rover) and TD4 (BMW) engines were added, and the automatic (a Jatco) was introduced (circa 2001).
I had a 2002 Freelander V6 Auto. Where do I start ... very good ride quality, very good performance (5spd auto + V6 was rare back in 2002, only LR had it) on and offroad. I used mine offroad. Initially we were very very happy with it.
The bad? It became horrendously problematic. In the end I traded it (on my Jetta) because LR could not fix several significant problems with it despite repeated (almost monthly) visits and overnight stays at the dealership. It also had in its life the transmission, complete intake system, fuel pump and ECU replaced (plus many other minor items). It also (unknown to me until I traded it) had the engine replaced at some point (sneaky sneaky dealer never told me that).
I could never bring myself to buy another LR product. I am currently shopping for a 4WD and again, while the Disco 4 and Freelander 2 are very well awarded, I don't think I could put my money there again.
They look good on paper, and test drive well, and get reviewed well ... but the LR ownership experience can be troubling to say the least. Only time will tell if they have improved, but I'm not taking that gamble just yet.
