Flappy paddles steering wheel in Tiguan.

This mod is so tempting. Ebay europe has a few passatt / eos steering wheels no airbag (can reuse the tiguan's)but with paddles for under $200 plus shipping. Same part no as the one linked by Wynnston. After driving cars with paddles for over 2 yrs, it feels a bit weird without them..

Yes of all the mods I've made to the car the flappy paddles is certainly up there with some of the better ones. Mine ended up a lot more than $200 but certainly for that price I'd be jumping on it. I'm not sure why VW offer a DSG car without flappy paddles to be honest - or at least provide the option for them.

Ok boys, looking to join the paddle shift Tig brigade! Now that i have a DSG equipped Tig. I have a fairly limited budget as I have my eyes on a few other mods and I need to get this past the Missus otherwise I will be up for one of those thermomix all in one units!

I have had a look at some of the SW's that Wynnston posted earlier. Found one that looks reasonable although from the photo the buttons look a bit tatty. Question 1 can I change the SW buttons from my existing wheel to the paddleshift one or are they integrated with the shift buttons. It appears from my research there are now 3 types if airbags but I suspect my new Tig air bag will not fit and I will end up getting the same one that Tigger 73 got for his GTI wheel. Question 2 how does one tell what colour the air bag is as I have seen some eBay sellers do refer to a colour code when selling the SW. It is very difficult to tell tell from dark grey to black from the photo these guys post on eBay.

I've seen these paddles, however not sure if you can just bolt them onto an existing steering wheel without paddles or not....

Ok it looks like they come as separate parts which means I could,go down the second hand route providing the rest of the wheel is in acceptable condition. My third question is does anyone know of any other VAG model that has flappy paddle shift fitted as standard or available as an extra with the DQ500 7 spd transmission? I am just trying to figure out if VW have a technical reason not to fit this option to this particular gearbox or are they just being awkward?

Ok, just answered my own question the Q3 has it available as an optional extra.

I'm pretty sure Tigs in other countries do come with flappy paddles with DSG fitted. Unfortunately it's not even an option here. There was even a story of someone receiving their Tig here in Oz with a flappy paddle steering wheel fitted. Dealer said this was a mistake, however I'm guessing that the guys on the production line put the wrong steering wheel on or vehicles got mixed up along the way somehow.

Anyway it's definitely something that goes on for other markets.

You could even fit flappy paddles on a conventional auto.

I am aware paddle shift is fitted on the old slush boxes and the original 6 spd DSG gearbox,The reason why I was asking the question is IF this particular DQ500 DSG box went tits up during the warranty period VWA could use this as loophole not to honour the warranty claim as you have a unauthorized VWA modification to the gear selection method. However if they are offering the aforementioned method using the same type of gearbox elsewhere or in a different vehicle like the Q3 then it would negate their argument not to honour the warranty claim

I think it is highly unlikely that they could pin a DSG failure on a flappy paddle steering wheel being installed. Essentially it will be doing exactly the same thing as running your car in manual mode from the gear stick. Plus the functionality is inbuilt into the electronics of the car anyway and you're just enabling an option that already exists in VCDS. So they really can't say that it wasn't designed to have it fitted as it is supported but just not installed in the factory.

If you're really worried then I'd get a VW dealer to do the physical swap over. That way if anything does come back to bite you on the bum then from an insurance perspective then you've got a VW service receipt stating the work that was carried out. Though they may want to put on a genuine spare parts supplied through VWA which would not be a cheap option. I understand this position from some workshops as they then know exactly what they have put onto your car - especially when it comes to things like airbags....

Like any mod you do it won't be covered under manufacturer warranty. It's a risk you take doing anything to your car that you don't stuff it up. I personally think the risk is less on the side of the DSG and more on the side of the airbag as there's no way to test this (other than it not throwing a fault) and this is something that you really need to work if you're in the unfortunate position having an accident.

FWIW (haven't been following this thread so I hope I'm not doubling up) the new Rline DSG Tiguan in Britain is now available with paddles as a low cost option (only 50 Pounds UK or something). This has only happened in the last couple of weeks.
