My Tiguan purchase was a bit of a downgrade from my last car, a 2008 Volvo XC70 D5. I had optioned that car up which I had kept longer than any other car before it (4 years/120,000kms).

I fancied something a bit smaller and nimble. Not totally convinced by DSG reliability and as I didn't need AWD, just the extra ground clearance for occasional farm visits, the Tiguan TSI fitted the bill. It was also my intention to pass this car on to my partner after 2 years or so (which she loves after the drives she has had…) as she will be due for a new car by then and this will save me having to find her something in the spec we would want in the future. I could buy her a new car car but this strategy will save $ as she does 6000kms/year and that will average out nicely with my use (25-30,000kms).

So, it has all been going quite well and the TSI motor is a great thing (even unmodified) with plenty of torque compared to the FSI motor of our Jetta. I am averaging 7.7l/100kms in a combination of town and country running. The Volvo used to average 8.7l/100kms in the same conditions.

The Tiguan is definitely not as smooth or comfortable on the open road but I didn't really expect it to be (size and weight means that would be impossible) but counteracting that is the much better handling and steering accuracy (a Volvo weakness). I did miss the Volvo seats for a while (except the leather even though they were heated and cooled) but I have got used to the different structure and as long I don't get pain I am happy (I am 6ft 1").

The only thing I really missed, was keyless entry and start (Volvo option). Pity that it isn't a AU VW option as it is a great convenience feature. Yes, the stereo isn't as good either but frankly I think the Jettas is better again.

Funny that I have read on the Volvo boards that people are complaining of too bright footwell lighting (as you know in the far cheaper Tiguan you can adjust by 5% increments) and that some Executive models have door handle lighting but again, this is standard in the VW.

I have had plenty of european car experience (including a BMW X5) but I really like this Tiguan…

The only downer is that the yellow check engine light has just come on…

BTW. Someone I work with has a new 2WD Nissan Dualis. While she loves that, it just doesn't hold a candle to the Tiguan with fit, finish, features and so on. There really is a big difference for not much $ increase...
