Another thing to consider is if you fit bars like AlanTig's you've probably lost over 50mm of ground clearance and your ramp-over angle will be a real issue. So, if you're thinking of any sort of off-road work (I realise most people don't so it wont be an issue at all for them) you've got to be careful or have them strong enough that the cars weight can rest and slide on them if necessary.

VW are quoting $1340 for the side steps including fitting.
As a side note - the door scuff plates are being quoted at $520 for all four doors including fitting.
Seems very pricey, more than I thought they might be.
edit - I've decided I'll take delivery of the car, have a think about if I REALLY want them first.

I got a mate with a trade card to call and check the cost to purchase the sidesteps and they quoted (wait for it!) $697!
So if you want them just find a freind who is a mechanic and he should be able to install them for you.
I've got a black tiguan with VW side steps. Looks very good, especially with the scuff plates (of course you only see those when you open the doors). Will try and upload a photo tonight.
