Thanks for that Transporter. Do you think the WC054 Cooper brand oil filter will be ok? They were pretty sure they're 'all the same'.. Not sure.. if you guys suggest something better I can take this one back no probs.

Just a heads up if you're buying oil:
Repco has the Shell Helix Ultra Extra 5W30 (VW 507.00) on special for $52 for 5 litres. Sale on 29th Sept thru to 16th Oct. I made the mistake of buying the genuine VW stuff last time at $123+GST for 5 litres.

Don't risk it! I wouldn't use it in my engine if it was for free! The VW filter is the best and there is not a big price difference.

Got the authentic VW oil filter coming today, $19.65. Pollen filter $32.55 which I was quite surprised by as Autobarn wanted $55 for an OEM one. $5.50 for the courier too!

Thanks for your advice Transporter, I appreciate it.

Have found this frequently on the Skoda & the Golf before it. Some OEM consumables are pretty reasonably priced. IIRC, the Skoda oil filter is <$20 & the pollen filter similar. Aftermarket was about 50% more.

Hi all. Was of the same opinion, and was set to change oil after first 1000km, until service manager at VW dealership said NOT to, because VW puts special 10W monograde oil in at factory to help with run-in! Sounded good in theory so leaving mine until 10000km or so. Made the mistake of getting 5L of genuine oil without asking price first (eek!), so much better idea to use Penrite (as recommended by Transporter) or Castrol - was even a brochure in with owners manual stating which to use (Eco-something), and there is even Castrol on the filler cap, so I take that to mean Castrol is the same as genuine!
