Engine Number - where is it???

Does anyone know wher I can find the engine number for my 125 TSI Tig?

Popped the hood and took a look around but couldn't find anything obvious. Even went as far as takingthe plastic cover off the engine but nothing hitting me in the face.

And not in the service manual - already checked there.

Its not "visible easily" was what I was told by the dealer when vicroads wanted to check it out at an inspection when I registered it last week. Had to get a delivery docket with the vin and engine number faxed to vicroads from dealer.. They have the vin in multiple spots but no engine number?

Should be stamped on the side of the engine block, I know with my engine (GTI Pirelli) is stamped simply with just BYD.

Should be on the front side of the block, down near where the starter motor goes through the gearbox.

There should also be a label on the top timing belt/chain cover, with a long barcode on it. In small writing under that, will have the engine number.

Some inspectors will tell you that the number must be visible without removing any covers.

Then I guess most cars would fail that test.
