Drivetrain Fluid Service Cost Estimate.. (Tiptronic AT, Haldex, 2 x Diffs..)

Hi All,

Anyone have any info about costs (or estimate) on replacing all the fluids in the drive train on a 2012 4Motion with Tiptronic Auto from their recent services.. (other service items are up to date and not required).

..or if the guys doing it on here for a living - what's your estimate for a fluid service on the ATF, Haldex fluid + both diffs fluid?

Haldex oil is about $110 or so for 1L (its an expensive oil). So I guess you would be paying around $200 for someone to change the Haldex oil including labour. Haldex Oil - Gen 2 & 4 Haldex - Audi 8P/8J & Volkswagen MK5/MK6 - G055175A2– VAGPARTS Australia

Gearbox oil is about $25-30 per litre for good quality non-genuine stuff or about $50 per litre for genuine VW. You would need 5-6 litres (guess-timate) as well as a filter etc. You are probably looking at $400-450 for someone to do this.

Front and rear diff oils and also kind of pricey. About $50-60 per litre for good quality non-genuine oil, or about $90 per litre for genuine VW. So probably about $150-200 for each individual diff.

..didn't I buy a couple of VW Suspension specific tools (strut top tool and another one) from you.. dim memory that I'll dig out - I still haven't done the job I intended!
Anyway, thanks for the cost estimates.. I had someone throw me a loose quote of 800-900 for the whole drivetrain which I needed to query.. seems it might be ballpark to your numbers. Its from a Euro mech specialist so they should know the process required with temperatures / fill levels etc. on the Tiptro..
I'm a bit leery about so many "Automobile Service Joints" that say stuff like "its sealed for life" and even the VW service outfits.

My Tiguan Tiptro has had a symptom I asked about here years ago which I am still wondering about (flaring engine revs instead of changing when gently increasing throttle - sometimes it hunkers down and lugs the same gear most times the revs flare - if you press it less gently it kicks down and gets on with it - It also gets poor fuel economy around town so I want to see if I can eliminate the tranny as a cause of any problems ).

How many km's are on the car? And has it had a transmission service previously? The whole "sealed for life" line is rubbish. The manufacturers consider "life" to be 8-10 years and then they want you to buy a brand new car. You most definitely should change the transmission oil at set intervals (probably every 60,000-80,000km to be safe) if you want it to last beyond the manufacturers "life" expectancy.

If you get all the work done at the same time then you will possibly save a little time on the labour side of things - but it sounds like your main area of concern is the transmission itself.

There are plenty of VW specialist mechanics in Sydney who im sure will do the work for you. Sydney is a biiiiiig place, so what area of Sydney are you in? (North, South, East, West etc)

The only thing to discuss with the service place (perhaps after letting them take a drive and experience the flaring symptoms) is that sometimes if the transmission already has an issue, that giving it a service can sometimes makes the problem worse. Best to discuss with them the pros and cons and the fact that you may need a new transmission and/or other parts replaced.
