    Driveshaft noise?

    Hi, MY12 132 DSG7:
Getting a constant whirring noise, more noticeable on smoother tar. Cant really pinpoint where its coming from but sounds very much like the start of a CV or driveshaft issue. Its done 36000 km. i did mention a slight noise to the dealer at last service but of course their computer said there was no problem. But it seems to be getting louder.

Is there anything obvious i can look for. I looked for signs of leaks from cv boots but nothing.

Is there any history if early problems with Tigs? It did have an impact on the front right wheel. Someone t boned me and hit the wheel. It was replaced but maybe the driveshaft got damaged? Hopefully not as 7 months of bad repairs being re-repaired by crap aami repairer has left me with zero faith in them to fix anything.

Hi Blackie, it could be something simple like a 'sawtooth' phenomenon on rear tyres where the tread-blocks wear resembling the side on view of a circular saw blade. The rears will wear that way if you are particularly hard on the brakes. Maybe try a wheel alignment & rotation if you haven't done it in a while?

    Good luck!

Could be the excessive feathering as described above, that some experience.

Rotating them once it's already occurred, just moves the noise to the other end of the car. Only solution then is to replace the offending tyres, keep your tyre pressures up around 40psi, keep your wheel alignent in check, and rotate your tyres at every service.

Thanks MGV, tyres, balance etc are all recent and ok.

Sounds strange but i thnk i ca feel it through the floor but not the steering wheel. Just whir whir whir noise at the moment and matching vibration thru accelerator foot. Doesnt have any clunk on takeoff or turning so not a full on cv problem. I thought maybe a slightly bent shaft from accident but repairer and dealer say no.

Its very similar to a tailshaft uni joint problem i had years ago with a sigma - yeah i was unfortunate enough to own a sigma!

I suppose if it gets much worse dealer might even 'detect' it.

I thought maybe it was some 4 motion standard thing until it got worse.

There's a dampener on the rear of the tailshaft that can very occasionally fail.

It's super uncommon, but worth looking into.

Unfortunately that does not mean much. I had this in my tyres in about 5,000 km from new.

Just crawled under car as noise is driving me crazy. It is road speed related, not engine speed or gear.

Probably just tyres but they look evenly worn and just did the latest rotation, balance and alignment.

Only thing i found under the car was one if the shafts that goes from the wheel towards the gearbox moves a little back and forwards towards the wheel, lateral? movement rather than rotational. This is front passenger side. The other 3 shafts do not move at all like this. I think it is called the outer shaft? There is a cv boot at each end of it. Its only about a couple of mm movement and a clunk when it stops.

Is the movement normal and could it be causing the noise?

Thanks for any thoughts. The dealer cant even book it in for a paid inspection for 3 weeks, so i'll take it to a real mechanic if it gets serious.

Tyre dealer reckons the noise is the sawtooth thing on the tyres, so thanks guys for the suggestions. I'll replace them in a few weeks when they hit 40k.

New noise is window in rear door, loud glassy metal clunk when you hit a bump. Only stops when window is fully lowered. Something loose inside door at a guess.

Bloody annoying and took ages to find. Have to get dealer to fix at next service, assuming their computer agrees there is a noise.
