I.m consider remap for my TDI am close to ordering a bluefin unit

They offer both handheld device you attach to diag port which saves the original map and applies the upgraded one or a workshop remap like the oettinger

claims similar results to Oettinger for about 1/3 the cost for the self applied remap. but i gather some later VW diesels have the ecu encrypted
and need to be remapped in the workshop. at similar costs to Oettinger

Any experiences or comments appreciated

It's not only the later cars that need the new method, earlier versions of the EDC17 Ecu's are now being updated at VW service to the later encryption.

So you may be able to program your car today with a cheap hand held unit, but after a service, you may not.

On the power outputs, honestly, run a trial of each in your car - I'm pretty sure you will find a noticeable difference between the products. It's not all about the numbers.

There you go! Another great benefit from getting your car regularly updated for free, when you take it in for a genuine service.
I think it's the time to put locking cover on the diagnostic port in our new Tiguan, should it accidentally be near to the VW dealer.

As I understand it (I enquired with the NZ dealer) the Bluefin system will NOT work with the updated ecu AND they will not refund you should this occur after installation. That means (as I see it) that effectively your VW agent can (purposely or otherwise) completely negate the BlueFin with an upgrade to your ecu.

If they don't ask you before they re-program the ECU. It brings up the question. Who owns your car? The dealer or VW? To be sure that your mods don't go away and your car is still running smooth with additional hardware that you fitted (if you did), tell them do not reprogram the ECU or anything in your car without contacting you first! The car was sold to you and complied to ADR at the time and is fit for the purpose. There is no need to tinker with it in the way they do.

Not a practising 1 anyway ..... As I understand it (and I have not had time to read any doco on this) its pretty much the same as automatic updates from Microsoft for instance .... in order to remain complaint (and keep your warranty) all updates should be applied when they become available.

Its a "service" offered by the manufacturers and not intended to cause harm, rather its intended to provide "fixes". Its the same as plugging in the diagnostic equipment and clearing any error codes.

APR and Oettinger dealers will reload your ECU tuning software for only a labour cost (if any) For other tuners not widely represented in Aus/NZ you'r pretty much on your own....

You are perfectly entitled to tell the VW dealer not too do anything like it, but this will

1.) raise suspicion about your car being chipped with warranty implication issues, and
2.) negate your warranty on any item/issue the "update" is meant to address.

To keep your warranty healthy its best to do all your recalls & updates ....

Alternatively, take your car to a VW specialist for servicing who will get to know your car and its "enhancements" and not do anything without asking you 1st ....
