Ended up being incorrectly fitted drain plug. No apology.
Yes, could have had it towed but the previously experienced damage from towies with zero knowledge of autohold, and zero concern put me off that option. And yes, damage would be covered, but the inconvenience never is.

    Which translates to left lose.
You were lucky to noticed it in time. The inconvenience could be, your engine seized, ending up to be just rebuilt (not replaced) and you without a car for a couple or few weeks or so.

I like the happy endings, though.

Just saw this thread - the service team at Kloster VW are atrocious, totally useless and rude to boot. I will never take my car back there again unless absolutely necessary.

I get my Golf serviced at Newcastle Audi, who are not only cheaper, but far more capable than Kloster VW. I am super fussy with my car, and i will shortly be getting my car serviced for the 3rd time at Audi - im 100% happy with them. Another option, as mentioned earlier by someone else, is European Car Centre at Wickham. Several friends have their cars serviced there with good feedback.

How could a drain plug be incorrectly fitted? It is just not acceptable.

It's called getting a 16 year old apprentice to do the oil changes and the head mechanic not checking on their work.
