I have no idea but have noticed the same thing in my Golf6. Time is right but date and year are way out. Will ask at a Vag forum and report back if I hear anything.
Was checking my Tiguan via newly acquired VCDS the other day and cleared a (trivial) fault entry. But noticed that although it had a sensible time stamp, the date shown was back in 2003.
Where did it get that from? Only date setting I know of is in the RNS510, although its manual says it gets the date from elsewhere in the car, which sounds like garbage, since you can set it through the 510's setup menu.
Any ideas?

Checked with the Ross Tech guys and they reported back that essentailly you might as well ignore the date stamps.
"FWIW, this is not a VCDS problem. The factory's VAS-505x tools would show the exact same date."

Thanks Logger.
Seems a bit dumb, but I'll bow to the experts...!

There's no place to set the date on the car as you can only set the time via the MFD.
The new ECU's like the MED 17's support date and time and not just time like the previous ECU's.
To test this take a look at the date/time now via VCDS by doing something that will throw a code (like uncode the headunit) and than disconnect the battery and reconnected after ten minutes which should reset the date and time. The date should be something like 01/07/2003 and the time will be something like 00:02.
It should be possible to set the date via VCDS using adaption but it's probably not documented yet.
