"Crunch" goes the gearbox

Much unhappiness in my household at the moment

Last night I wanted to head out, so climbed in the Tig and starter her up. Slipped it into "D" to the sound of a horrible crunch and clunk. Transmission light on the dash came on with a ding, and my heart sank. Tried to drive hoping everything would reset itself, but unfortunately it didn't. Didn't want to change gear in "D", "S", or Tiptronic mode.

I parked her again and had a poor nights sleep. Phone Roadside Assist this morning and they recommended I try "resetting" it by unlocking and locking several times in close succession, and if that didn't work they'd have to tow me to a dealer.

I tried the trick, started up, and this time when I slipped into gear it didn't crunch... but the warning light on the dash was still lit. Went for a short drive and this time it DID change gears and let me get up to 60 (speed limit in my area... could probably go faster) without problems, but the dash light is still lit up and didn't reset. Am relieved about that as I presume that means it isn't a chronic mechanical failure... but I won't know till the dealer sees it I guess.

Called the dealer just after 8am and they took my details. Waiting for a service agent to call me back and tell me what to do. Needless to say, I'm still very concerned about what's wrong and what happens next.

That's certainly a suck hole of a thing to happen. The light may be still on because of the hissy fit it threw but definitely needs to be checked out. Luckily it's still under warranty, I wouldn't want to know how much a rebuild on that box would cost :S

Can you request they use redline oil for the gearbox as it is apparently a lot better quality than the vw stuff?

Yeah, I have to admit that this happening has put me off the idea of chipping now. It may just be a one off oddity, but now that I know my 'box is questionable it means that chipping is off the table for me now.

My dealer cannot book me in till the 29th!!!!! but has agreed to plug it into the diagnostic machine on Monday morning to see what it says. I am seriously hoping it's just a case of needing to clear codes and that it was just an odd glitch rather than a mechanical failure. I drove it again this afternoon (albeit gingerly) and it changed gears fine all the way up to 6th and down again. No strange sounds or behaviour that I could identify. Just the lights on the dash are all on still *shrug*. Will see on Monday I guess.

I'm sorry to hear that mate. Was the car parked on the level surface or was it very steep on? And just a silly question; when you normally park, do you put it in the N first, than switch the engine OFF, put the hand brake ON and with the foot OFF the brake pedal shift in P and then remove the key from the ignition.
Also it would be worthwhile to have it scanned with VCDS before you go to the dealer. I hope it is nothing major.

Yeah, car was parked at home on the level. When I normally park I slip it straight into P with foot on the brake, then put on handbrake, except I think I do it too quickly (except a few times where I accidentally didn't take it out of gear before turning the engine off). I've been going through it over and over and it's the only answer I can come up with. I may have taken it out of gear too fast when I got home from work, then put it back in gear too fast after restarting it. Who knows.

If I can find a VCDS cable today to scan, will it affect what the dealer can do when they scan on Monday?

OK, so I have a cheap eBay Micro-CAN cable which I figured I could use to do a quick scan. I dare not do any resetting of codes yet. If anyone can help interpret this log I would be most grateful!
