    If the coolant level warning light is coming on only when cold AND the coolant level is correct, then usually the sensor in the bottle is at fault. Easy fix for it is to give the two prongs a good scrub with a toothbrush and fill the bottle up with a little extra coolant concentrate.

    The two temp sensors & no other sensors in the motor will cause the coolant LEVEL light to come on. However if your having a coolant temperature light come on, then that is a different kettle of fish.

    If you are loosing coolant, it might help if you let us know what motor you have.

    Hi guys,

    So this morning the coolant level has dropped overnight after topping it up last week at the VW service centre.

    @Snail Style: It's a 2009 Tiguan 2.0 TSI 4motion.

    Thought I'd like to add that I don't see any coolant dripping on the garage floor.

    Dropped by how much? How many mm under the minimum? If you top up to full mark when the engine is at operating temperature the coolant level will drop a few mm when the engine is cold in the morning, that's the law of physics.

    Let's assume the reservoir was filled to the top mark when the engine was warmish, you reckon it'll drop by this much?

    Anyways, I've filled it up again while it's cold. We'll see how it goes...keep ya posted

    Ok, it's a closed system and the level shouldn't drop by that much. Make sure you keep the record of how much you added in.

    With the car level, the coolant level should be between MIN and MAX when the engine is cold (ambient temperature). If it is below the MIN level, it should be topped up with coolant (of the same product) or distilled water.

    Due to expansion, the coolant level may exceed the MAX level when the engine is hot (operating temperature), which is normal. For reasons of consistency, accuracy and safety, do not top up the coolant level when hot, unless in an emergency.

    If the coolant level continues to drop below MIN when cold, there is a problem with the cooling system and the vehicle needs to be attended to.

    He topped up more than once when the level was below min and I think he is aware that the coolant expands and the level can be down when cold and up when warmed up.

    It wasn't clear to me if he (and other owners) know how to check the coolant level on these vehicles, so to eliminate any doubt, I thought I would mention it again for the benefit of everyone who reads this thread.

    So after taking the car to repairs they reckon the coolant pump is leaking under high pressure and evaporates due to the hot temperatures, which kind of makes sense as I didn't see any coolant leaking on to the floor of my garage.

    I'm guessing this part leaks due to fatigue (being 5 years old)? Keep ya guys posted and see if it fixes the issue.

    The coolant pump is a pretty common issue on your motor. I'd be having it replaced if it has been confirmed as the leak.
