Catalytic Converter Then EPC Warning. Light

118TSI, MANUAL. APR STAGE 1. No other mods apart from audio.

This morning the Cat warning light started flashing.
Got to work and it had stopped.
On way home it started flashing again, then went solid.
Then EPC (EPS?) light came on briefly, but has since gone out.

Engine feels a little lumpy on idle and from 2.5 to 3.5 k revs.

    No previous problems.
APR Stage one tune from new. Currently on 38k.
Booked in for a look at a local independent.

Anyone had any similar symptoms and would like to hazard a guess??
Tiguan MY12 118TSI, white, no frills..... Had ANS810 ... Note the HAD ..... Now got RCD510 supplemented by 7" Android TomTom mounted on a HoldMyPhone .... Upgraded speakers Vibe BlackAir front splits and MBQuartz 12" ported sub driven from Infinity Reference 5350a amp .... oh and added fun

Possible coil pack on the way out. Scan will tell.

Check the oil levels - is it too high?

Whatever you do, don't take it anywhere near a VW dealer with your tune on. If you need a new engine you don't want to have any hint that the car has been tuned.

Fingers crossed it's just a coil pack.

Well after 7 weeks of anxious waiting I finally got my Tiguan back.
It was diagnosed as having bad detonation in several cylinders, causing damage to the piston rings and subsequent low compression. Probable cause was petrol, not dodgy petrol.....just petrol!
It would appear that our Aussie 98RON is not the best and VW seem to implicitly admit this.

Anyway, it's all fixed under warranty with new pistons and rings etc. Waiting to see the full report, but the written list of things replaced went on for pages.

It would appear there are new strengthened pistons and rings; no details yet on when these were introduced, but I've now got them.

There were several other cars in for similar repair at this one dealer, who apart from the wait has been very helpful. VW hired me a Passat 1.8T with DSG for 5 of those weeks, which was an interesting an educational drive. Now I know what people mean when they describe the DSG as the best and worst bit of a VW,

And it's good to know that drivetrain warranties have been extended to 5 years.

    Happy new year everyone

What brand of 98 were you using out of curiosity?

Well just a little more than a coil pack then....

Good news that it was all covered under warranty.

...and thanks for posting the follow up - always good to hear how these issues get resolved and what the fault ended up being.

    >90% of time it would be Shell from one of 2 servo's. Maybe the odd Caltex. Always 98, never 95.

I was actually hoping that we wouldn't see these problems in the Tiguan but looks like all the 118's are an issue whatever car it goes in.
