    Carbonio Intake Loud Whistle

I have recently been stage 1 tuned (very happy) and now I've added the Carbonio intake.

It sounds great but I get an annoying whistle at WOT. I actually think I heard it before but it was quieter (with the stock intake). Now it's a lot more noticeable.

I didn't take a video but managed to find a GTI on youtube with the exact same sound.

Any thoughts? I've double and triple checked all the hose clamps. I'm thinking it's the diverter valve issue that I've seen pop up elsewhere, or is this just a characteristic that is emphasised by the intake?

    Thanks in advance.

I had the same experience, sounds like a continuous computer beeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep rather than a normal engine sound
Because of this I was called the "Screaming Skoda", the "Whistling Skoda" and the "Scud Missile" at a track day
Here you can clearly hear the beeeeeep right from the hairpin to the braking zone (where the diverter kicks in)

It's either the intercooler or the pipes to the intercooler
When I put the bigger APR intercooler into the car the beeeep has 90% disappeared

I've just spoken with a friend and he thinks it might be a Diverter Valve problem. Apparently they tear easily and make this sound.

I will still check the rest of the plumbing on the weekend.

Seems to still hold boost ok, the noise is more of an annoyance than anything at this stage.

Replaced the Diverter Valve with a Rev "D" valve and no more whistle/whine.

Interesting to see the part number of my DV was 06H 145 710 C which I thought was the older revision. My cars final build date was 11/2012.

I was going to get the dealer to sort but I could find a DV very quickly and figured that it was more convenient to change over myself to something I know is going to hold up better.

    *Edit.

After a bit of reading the 06H's are piston type rev "C"'s so they are newer. Interesting that mine played up. I wasn't noticeably loosing boost it was just the whine. Anyway, the noise has gone now so it must have fixed something.

Hi, haven't had whistling noise (have Carbonio as well), and I can't imagine it would be DV as the newer piston type are much better than older diaphragm type. I would be very carefully checking ALL hose connections to make sure there is no chance there is any way air could be leaking through. I probably went overkill, but have two constant torque clamps ( ones with spring and nyloc nut so they can't vibrate loose) on my hose connection from CAI to OE pipe!
On the topic of noise though, since having tune done I have a weird "chuntering" noise at low to medium revs/throttle - sometimes combined with slight hesitation. It is very mechanical noise which suggests it is coming from exhaust side of turbo?!
Has anyone else experienced this? The tuner believes it may be related to CAI, but I would have thought their tune would have made allowances for change in MAF readings...
    Very puzzling

I solved my whistle/whine with that other Diverter valve but I can still hear it whistle/whine on the very odd occasion and nothing like it was before, probably just my paranoia. I went to the plex the other night and ran a 14.054 while loaded up with a large suitcase, my whole sound system (amps, swoofer), 3/4 tank and a few other bits so I'm guessing it's not affecting the performance.

    *Edit, read your post properly.

What do you mean chuntering? Is it like a turbo intake type flutter or a rattle?

Yes, just reread it - sorry, was speed reading while waiting to board flight
Noise is more a flutter, and you can hear a "slurp & slam" like a flap that's not quite closed suddenly sealing?!

That could be your diverter valve. Flutter noise is normal to a degree and will be noticeable if you run more boost. I was speaking with a friend about his MK6 GTI the other day and he had a very similar problem. In his case the diverter valve was completley shot. He didn't get the whistle but he got lots of flutter and hesitation. If you have VAGCOM you should measure the specified boost vs the actual boost. If there is a big difference then there is a leak in your system somewhere. I know I keep harping on about the Diverter Valve but it is a weak spot and in your case you might have a diaphragm one, not a piston one.

Don't have vagcom, and pretty sure it is piston type, but might whip it out anyway and have a look to make sure.
    Cheers
