Car bra

Hi all,

Has anyone ever installed a car bra before? Any feedback on them? Thinking of this rather than a bonnet protector.

Alternatively I've seen what is known as a Paint Protection Film. It's like a laminated sheet that you stick on your bonnet, wing mirrors, bumper etc to protect it from stone chips.

Looks far better than a car bra.

My view on these (and yes it's just my personal opinion) is that they look awful and I can't see any point in protecting the paint (with the car looking yuck) for the next owner, cos most people take them off when they sell them. Maybe if I was driving on gravel roads all the time with lots of traffic chucking stones up I'd do something, ............... nah just decided I woudn't

Some car manufacturers use the stone chip resistant paint on the areas that are likely to suffer from stone chips. Our Subaru Forester is like that and the we don't have damaged paint anywhere at the front of the car. We are maybe just lucky but we have chipped paint on the tail gate.
Of course the car bra will protect paint better, it depends what environment you drive your car in. Otherwise I would be checking if VW is also not using stone chip resistant paint or similar tricks.

Pretty much what NZTiguan says. I hate the look of them, as well as the narrow bonnet protector offered by VW (when they start to get dirty or yellow over time), but I am getting the latter nonetheless for the very reason he mentions - a fair amount of gravel driving. Not sure how much protection that thin strip of plastic will provide, but i really hate the look of the larger car bras.

I agree that the car bra looks ugly. But has anyone seen 3M (or similar) film that is placed around the car including the bonnet, head lamps, wheel guards, wing mirrors and the boot lip? It's a film that is stuck on and is meant to protect from stone chip, scratches etc. You can hardly see it unless you look closely.

I was quoted about $750 to do the whole lot. lifetime warranty. Professionally installed.

Autobarn sells a similar product for $45 but it's only for the bonnet.

I have a carbra for the Golf V and use it for country & interstate trips only. I paid extra for a white one to match the paint colour, but you can also contrast with a different colour.

For our black Polo, I'd buy either a silver or red, which will help make the car more visable on te highway.

The 3M tape I don't like. It's on the car ALL the time, where as the carbra is removed.

The carbra mesh covering the radiator areas will also stop grass, grass seeds, locusts & stones - the 3M won't.

All is needed is to keep the backing of the bra clean with a gentle vaccum every now & then, and use a quick detailer to clean each time to the area the bra will cover on the car, and there is little chance of scratching. I also put some painter's tape over any protuding part the bra will cover, including the VW badge.
