It is a genuine part, but the updated version. Not only a ratchet to hold tension on the chain when there is no hydraulic pressure, but also a spring. Virtually failsafe, hopefully. There has been about 4 reincarnations of the tensioner and this is the latest.

    New Motor Going Strong!

Well, 12 months has passed since starting this thread & 20000km's clocked up & the new motor is faultless. Might have used a little oil in the 1st 5000km, maybe half a litre, but i changed that oil then (early) & it's hardly used any over the next 15000.

A couple of small issues were quickly rectified immediately after the new engine went in - they were a heat shield rubbing on the driveshaft to the rear wheels that would make a scraping sound occasionally, & some sort of pinched O ring where the turbo bolted on, making the odd hissing sound.

All good, still a happy VWer!

That's a good result, ...and no excessive oil consumption.

    Good to hear!

An engine change is a fairly big undertaking, so there's always the odd teething problem that will spring up. Unfortunately some require some miles before they do. Fortunately in your case, you had a cooperative and sympathetic dealer to sort it out

    Just adding my 2 cents.

I bought a Golf GTI MK6 second hand last year and it started the rattle earlier this year.

It is 6 months out of warranty, but I called VW Australia and they said I can take it in for good will assessment at my local dealer. I was willing to pay the diagnosis fee, but based on the service managers feedback he said it would be most likely be covered as the tensioner is known TPI.

So after having it for the day they rang me and said all covered by warranty, just have to wait 2 days for the parts. Car went in, and during that time they also found another tensioner that was not serious, but worth replacing while the engine was open, so they rang and informed me that they would get this part as well and car will be done a day later.

Picked up the car and been perfect since, no rattle and all paid for by VW. Happy customer.

They also been trying to fix the hesitation on my Tiguan, but I think after replacing the coils and PCV with no change, it is leaning towards what people have mentioned on this forum. Dreaded carbon build-up. Will see what they can do about this in the coming weeks as it seems a little better for some reason.

Ps. They also replaced the battery in my Tiguan this week under warranty (battery was 3 years old).

Overall been very happy with dealers help with both my cars.

Again! Thought I had it fixed late last year, it's back! Rattling is back from the dead. Got under the car and checked wastegate clip, was solid as a rock. Maybe not fitted correctly and stretched. Please not the tensioner. Booked in early next month. Might as well ride a bicycle, reliable.

Ive just realised that my newly purchased (2nd hand) 2010 Golf GTI is making this rattle on startup. Every time i have started the car over the past few weeks and heard this noise, i have wondered if it was the timing tensioner.

Looks like ill be buying a tensioner kit from USA and replacing it. That will be fun

Lucas_R - you could go to VW and mention that it is a common problem. My car is second hand 6 months out of warranty and they replaced all the tensioners in my car under good will warranty. Didn't cost me a thing.
