(AWD) Haldex Failure - Tiguan

Hi guys,

Recently I've had my haldex unit fail and my car is stuck in FWD drive only.
Interestingly enough, I had absolutely no warning or messages on my dashboard but scanning for faults shows error 00448.

The car has done only 58-59k.

I already had the haldex fluid changed around 2 years ago.

I no longer have my warranty at VW and they have quoted me $220 just to have a look at the car...

What are my options here? How can I begin diagnosing what exactly went wrong?

Someone noted that if I were to replace the pump, it will no longer be calibrated properly and the torque bias will be off compared to OEM.

Anyone else experience this fault and have any information about it?

I've assisted with many of these failures for family and friends.

In short, the commutator bars wear down in the Haldex pump motor because the original design _SHOULD_ have been brushless given how often it's running, however, wasn't.

As the pump is always kept at pressure to keep things ready for action, it's always ticking along during driving so it wears out.

Assuming the controller is happy and the clutches are not broken, etc etc etc assumptions nothing else is broken.

Just the error code you list is you just need to talk to VW Parts, get the part number for your haldex pump specific to your car - jump on the old interwebs and pick one up off ebay. You can then hand that to VW to replace and bob is your uncle. They'll charge you an hour or twos labour, haldex fluid on top. Most if not all cars your age that have not been replaced have a dead pump just the owners are none the wiser as the system doesn't complain.

To be sure you getting 100% new 1st grade quality part?

...not a 2nd, 3rd grade somehow damaged by flood or who knows what. Some call it excess of production. I call it the stock that was sent to the scraps but instead end on the eBay ?

That's the risk some are prepared to take.

There are Haldex agents with online stores though.

i had the same issue on my tig at about 70,000. Had it serviced at Prestige and Performance in Brisbane, they fixed it for around $300 while I was getting my service done and its been great since (another 40k so far) I'm not sure who's good in Melbourne but I'd be finding a good independent VW mechanic and see what they have to say.

I was sceptical at first as well. The ebay user I refer to is a VW dealership in Berlin that ship the part from their inventory. It comes with a part warranty from them for 2 years. As the part is now for older model cars it's inexpensive as they have _loads_ of them kicking around in EU.

The part comes in the original VW box still sealed internally. Can't really get much better than that! All the cars repaired so have been working flawlessly for years now using this method.

We get absolutely shafted in AU on VW parts. Profit profit profit!

Just don't direct your feeling towards the dealerships. They don't get much of a say in how the prices are set.

Hello Folks, I live in Scotland and recently my Haldex Failed on my 2010 Tiguan .. there's a company in England who specialise in Haldex Repairs etc and sell all the parts which are OEM from Borg & Warner whom make the Haldex Units or this is what I believe to be true.

Anyway I have just recently gone through this replacement using the guide from the company which is for the Audi TT but also applies to mk1 Tiguans with a Gen 4 Haldex Pump ... hope this helps ... it's an easy repair .. I'm no mechanic and it took me approx 1 hour.
