Auto Hold and Park Brake - correct use?

    Hi All,

I have just taken delivery of a new Tiguan 103TDI 4 Motion DSG.

It has the following (related to this post):

    •Auto hold

    •Park Brake

My driveway is a down hill slope. So every morning when I reverse out of my driveway once I disengage the park brake, the car will tend to roll forward unless you are fast on the accelerator pedal.

    My questions are:

what is the correct procedure for a hill start when using the following:

    •downhill start with auto hold

    •downhill start with park brake

    •uphill start with auto hold

    •uphill start with park brake

From my short experience auto hold does nothing when you reverse, the car just revs and sounds like gears are clashing. (Am I damaging the gearbox, during these attempts?)

I reverse even when park brake is engaged and it seems to disengage when i do. Could this be the correct way?
On a manual car I would tend to use the hand brake (slowly releasing) when I hit the friction point so that the car does not roll.

interesting quesions. Firstly, remember your DSG is not really an auto. I would use the auto hold for all forward movement, as for reversing, I've never tried it, but always assumed it would work the same once the sytem realised it was in reverse gear.

In your case where you might need it everyday, I believe you can get your VW workshop to set the autohold default to on, rather than off. Might save you a bit time in the morning.

My my10 has the option to set it through the mfd, in the settings menu I am guessing that this might only be in the latest Tigs.

    chris,
i have a 147 with dsg and regularly use the auto hold function to back out of a slight downward slope without the issues you mention.
i think the noise you refer to is the brakes releasing as the revs rise and detect there is sufficient power to overcome the autohold.
generally i have the autohold off only turning it on to back out of this parking spot in the main drag in ncl.
i will admit that i find the hand brake on our gti easier to manage than the auto hold/ electric park brake with dsg- some things aint an improvement vw...

Put it in gear and mash accelerator pedal to the floor, for maximum effect.

That doesn't sound right to me. Basically what I'm getting at is that there shouldn't be anything special required whether the park brake is engaged or not. At least, on my Tiguan (2009 103 TDI Manual), if I have the park brake engaged and auto-hold switched on, then the behaviour is the same no matter what. The auto hold can give a little clunk if I try to accelerate too hard when reversing whilst facing up hill in my driveway, but I just disengage it manually then to smooth things out for the passengers, never has it made a noise where I've been concerned for the mechanical integrity of the drivetrain.

I basically ignore the handbrake on my Tiguan. With auto-hold turned on, the handbrake tends to take care of itself for me. I just belt up before moving the car and enable auto-hold. The handbrake disengages as soon as I attempt to move. Then when I'm done driving and remove the key and open the car door the handbrake automatically engages again.

    Awkward feeling isnt it??
what you need to do is park the car on a hill facing downward (where you are all by yourself...) then put it in reverse and take your foot off the brake.... dont touch the accelerator and wait to see what happens.... the DSG should stop the car rolling forward and engage the gear to either hold the car or make the car reverse up the hill - depending upon the gradient of the hill.

This is something that i did with our jetta within the first few weeks. the first time going up a hill i **** myself coz i thought the car was gonna roll back into the car behind me. Trying it out a few times without anyone behind me and it rolls back less than 1-2 feet before catching it and rolling forward up the hill. After a while you will trust it to not let you roll back (or forward) very much.

The electric handbrake on the tig i am not sure about, ours is a manual gearbox and haven't had to do a handbrake start as yet.
Not sure if it disables the selection of gears etc... our jetta (manual handbrake and DSG) you can still do handbrake starts, leave handbrake on and take foot off brake pedal, car will start to try and go forward against the handbrake then release handbrake.
