Ok a quick call to the guys who did my Stage 1 APR tune "CNJ Motorsports" Brisbane, they said that K04 with the manual is a very bad idea...also Stage II upgrades are going to be very costly not due to the lack of an Australian distributor. Would be approx. $700 just to have it brought over and also there is no Australian support for the APR brand, all issues and questions would have to go back to America.

I guess that spells the end of feasibility of APR in Australia? I asked abut the new Stage 1 tune and he said I can get that done for 1hrs labour. Looking forward to that at least.

Before I heard of APR I knew about ABT, anyone know much about those guys?

There's plenty of other places to get a tune from in Brisbane. A custom downpipe could be had for under $1000 most likely.

CTS products are available in Australia. CTS Turbo Tiguan &i Q3 Downpipe

Then a-n-other tune to make the best from it. Or pay for the upgrade cost from APR if you wan to stay with them.

Just order the Carbonio intake from APR USA directly, it has no moving parts so no warranty issues.

Then as mentioned, get a custom downpipe made locally (for a lot cheaper than any APR system) and get CNJ to load the APR Stg2 file, which incidentally just "fixes" any O2 sensor issues with the downpipe. It does not actually make any other changes to the ECU maps.

And there you have a Stg2 Tiguan.

AND BTW, CNJ is correct, the manual's clutch will not handle a turbo upgrade and nobody (that I could find) did a suitable clutch upgrade to handle KO4 power on the manuals. In fact, at stg2 you will be pushing the limits of the clutch. 1 of the reasons I sold my (much loved) manual Tig and why my next Tig will be DSG ....

I was a bit worried after hearing of some of the clutch issues but mine is still performing as new with the factory clutch.
It's not like it has an easy life either, going to frequent happy laps outings.

Luckily if/when it starts to go there is the TTRS clutch upgrade which as shown on vwvortex, is a worthwhile improvement and can be had relatively cheaply as customers upgrade to performance clutches from the OEM TTRS ones somewhat frequently.

Well actually looking here: Southbend TSI Stage 3 Drop In Clutch Disc
Is this potentially a solution for those with a manual gearbox and considering a K04 upgrade? It seems to suggest it is. So is it just the clutch that would be the issue here with a K04 upgrade on a Tiggy manual or does the manual gearbox internals also struggle?

The southbend clutch doesn't fit the Tiguan, this was brought up on vwvortex.

A lot of companies presumed the Tiguan had the O2Q clutch part given it shares the 2.0TSI engine across the VAG brand but it actually has the OA6 which is only shared with the TTRS.

The clutch is the weak point when upgrading but it's also the gearing ratios which will limit the effectiveness from a standing start.

I think yours has an easier life than what mine had Clay, less hard starts

We tried that exact 1, did not fit the Tiguans ..... surprised to see it up there still, unless they "fixed" the fitment issues. Tiguan clutch is in no way similar to the Golf's which are also listed there.

You had an earlier model which may have been provided with a bad batch of clutches as there was some mentions of a few 09 or 09 models having clutch issues.

A lot of companies and users asumed the clutch was the same as the other 2.0TSI cars given the rest of the car carried identical parts.

True, its was an 09 and fixed under warranty as it simply disintegrated (attributed to manufacturing error) 1 day shifting from 2nd to 3rd .... could never really trust it afterwards though, which totally ruined the enjoyment of the car being driven enthusiastically.

Yeah there were a couple on the mytiguan forum and the vwvortex forum and they were all around 09/10.

Given that it wasn't widespread and only seemd to apply to some late 08/early 09 builds, i put it down to a bad batch of clutchs that were used rather than an issue with the core car components.
