I've installed the Kenwood carplay/android auto unit, great system, integrates well with the steering wheel controls, rear sensors and RVC. Requires a few add-ons for cambus, antenna etc. Great unit though, I looked at the Alpines but too limited with only apple support, the kenwood has android auto and google maps is excellent. Also if you don't plug the phone in you still get digital radio, USB, SD Card, CD/DVD, Spotify and Pandora apps, Mirrowlink, Blutooth etc etc.
I had it done at autobarn, I wouldn't recommend them they had a lot of trouble getting it installed (complaining the whole time about how terrible VW's are to work on), ended up setting off an airbag and my car was out of action for a few days, on the bright side they waived the install charges for their mistake so can't complain about that.
I got this for my Audi, way better solution as it integrates to the factory unit and you can play everything from your phone on the nav screen, i.e even TV shows/youtube etc

I did look at a lot of the integrated options, not sure I'd say they're way better, each options has its pros and cons, in the end I decided AA/Carplay is miles ahead of any in-car OS at the moment. I notice they don't mention the specs of the unit so I'd be surprised if it has a capacitive touch screen or a decent CPU.
I'm currently getting a quote from my local store for entry level Kenwood unit - DMX7017BTS.

It didn't seem to get much of a mention here but the RCD330+ with Carplay is OEM, can be had for under A$300 and is plug and play in most post 2007 VWs. It allows the use of the steering wheel controls no problem but the reversing camera needs a little fiddling from what i understand. There are self install videos for Golf MkVI and original Tiguan.
Only downside in my mind is the USB location in the front of the unit.

Think you misunderstood, that solution I posted integrates into the existing NAV unit in the car, it's not a new unit. For example in my Audi, I've got a cable in the console box, I just plug my phone into that and press a button on steering wheel and whatever is on the phone is mirrored on the screen. The audio comes out of the speakers as its connected via bluetooth.
I can use google maps, apple maps, youtube, stream live TV, basically anything you see on the phone you will see on the screen. Plus it charges your phone while it's connected. I think that's miles better than any carplay option which is limited to music and maps.
