About to buy a TIG - any help steering me appreciated

Hi all,

I already own a Golf MK7, and an Eos 2007 (in another country), and now looking to add a Tiguan to the VW stable for my wife and kids.

Right...so at the moment I'm pretty set on the 118TSI DSG for the following reasons:

1. My wife is never the type to drive fast, or require performance in any shape or form.
2. No towing or anything of the like - maybe a roof box at some stage
3. All the driving will be town, with maybe 10% being highway driving, and the very rare offroad excursion.
4. Really just looking for a safe family car.

My questions are:

I've found a 2013 118TSI DSG for $23,000 - with 15,000km on the clock from a private seller. This seems like a bargain to me. What do you think? Has the body shape changed between 2013 to now?

When buying second hand, for a slightly older car that is still under warranty such as this one, is it wise to do an independent inspection? Or can I feel safe in knowing the car is covered by the warranty anyway?

I'm a big fan of all the drivers assistance packages (DAP) etc. Does the 2013 118TSI come with any of these as standard, or if not - is it possible to have them added? I'm specifically looking for the Emergency City Braking, Lane assist, Adaptive Cruise Control and Blind spot. The Rear View Camera (RVC) is also a must for my mrs, as she is little and struggles to parallel park. The associated question is whether it's daft to try add all these features, and rather just buy one that has all of them included.

First you can buy a brand new 118TSI for $27,990 drive away with 12 months rego and a full 3 years warranty. $23k for a car with only 1 year warranty and possible not much rego, needing a service, half worn tyres starts to look not such a great deal.

Second have a look into the 118TSI twin charger engine issues in Golf and Polo. This is the same engine used in the Tiguan. Although there haven't been so many issues in the Tiguan there have been a couple of engine failures reported.

Finally I don't think you'll find the DAP features you're looking for (adaptive cruise etc). There was park assist in a few models but it came as an option and RVC is available now as standard but in previous models as an option. You'll only find the DAP features in MQB based cars(mk7 Golf) which the Tiguan is only moving to on 2016.

Personally I'd buy any of the 2.0 litre engines over the 1.4 twin charger even if it had a few more km on it.

Thanks Tigger73, good info. The DSG 118TSI seems to be $29,990, so a little out of my range. Do you reckon I should go 2011-2012 around the $18-20 mark if there is no sizable difference between then and now?

The current shape has been out since MY12 (Sept 2011). I'd probably lean towards the new (current) shape but mechanically they are virtually identical since 2008. The DSG only came in MY11, however there were also some traditional Tiptronic autos in the MY12.5 132TSI "Pacific" for around 6-9 months due to worldwide shortage of the DSG gearbox. The 7 speed DSG in the Tiguan has proven to be pretty reliable (bulletproof according to one of my local mechanics) so I wouldn't be too concerned with either auto box.
