Automatic torque converter yes. DSG actually no, it slows down the car like manual as it downshifts to lower gear.

Most dealerships will be extremely conservative when it comes to brake replacement recommendations. If they think you won't get to the next service then they'll recommend replacement. I can see their point but it adds a lot of expense to the customer that might easily get another 10,000km of usage out of the pads.

On my 125,000km Octavia that is fatter than a GTI but lighter than a Tiguan the brakes are F6mm & R4mm. I can't quite see how they could wear at twice the rate so I'm assuming the dealer is getting greedy.

Aftermarket dustless pads & higher quality rotors FTW!

Didn't know the Tiguan is that much heavier than a GTI. Would definitely wear the brakes faster then.
I can't see how an automatic car (DSG included) would wear brakes faster. The DSG certainly slows the car with the gearbox.

Just had my 45k service and my brakes still had 90% left on the front and 60% on the rear, which was a pleasant surprise - although seems odd that rears more worn than front?!

I've heard rears are softer material

If the Tiguan is the same as an Octavia (probably is) then under light braking the rears come on earlier than the fronts to reduce the severity of the nose dive. If you tend to use your brakes sparingly (eg: you read the traffic flow & tend to coast up to the lights rather than rush up & brake at the last moment) then the rears will wear quicker than the fronts. I'm at 125,000km & the fronts are about 80%, the rears 40%.

What's with Tiguans an rotor replacement, or any new car for that matter, what happened to machining discs, can't think of any car that I've had that needed the disc rotors thrown out and replaced with a new set before being machined, new pads yes but not new rotors, are the vw disc so thin to begin with?

Having said that my independent VW/Audi mechanic told me at the last yearly service I would need new discs soon,WTF, I courteously declined and said I would get back to him when needed, plenty of meat left in the discs, just had last yearly service last month to break down the costs of pending 60,000 service probably due in a couple of months again rotor replacement mentioned(actually I brought it up) but still a fair bit of meat left in the rotor, am I missing something or are modern car rotors junk to begin with?

Standard for a Euro vehicle. Mercs, VWs, Volvos, etc have been like that for 40 years.
