6 Sp Tiptronic or 7 Sp DSG Tiguan

With bubs coming along we have decided to purchase a Tiguan. I've been looking around on Carsales and have picked out a few relatively nice Pre 2013 models. Talking to a mate who owns a MY13, he mentioned that the 13/14 range comes with the 7 Sp DSG gearbox.

I was wondering on which one would be the better buy? I've been doing a little bit of reading, and it seems like the Tiguan was part of the recall back in 2013 with their 7 Sp DSG. I didn't really care too much about it, but has this been addressed?

Can someone outline the pros and cons of both? Which one will cost more to run on road in the long run?

The 7 speed DSG in the Tiguan is totally different gearbox to the Golf 7 speed DSG which was recalled. It is a much stronger unit and is shared with Transporter and Audi TT-RS.

Auto was available for some time when there were supply issues of the DSG. Auto is pretty bullet-proof but so is the DQ500 DSG. The hot tuner Stage 3 APR Tiguan is testament to that.

The one benefit of the 6 speed over the DSG is it's better in gravel and off-road use as it's much happier to "creep" along at walking pace whereas the DSG tends to jump in and out of gear and can land you in neutral in a particularly bad spot. That's why I personally have the 6 speed even in my 2013 BUT if you're not likely to be using it off-road much then the DSG is a better box AND is much more economic to run. Either is fine though imho !!

Won't be doing much off road, so it sounds like the DSG would be ideal.

What about servicing and onroad cost? From what I've read although the DSG would cost more to service, the fuel you save with the DSG model will make it cheaper to run overall.

I personally take my GTI to a specialist, and the DSG service costs roughly $700~800 off the top of my head. However, will I need to take the car back to VW for servicing if its still covered under VW warranty?

No, you don't need to take your car back to VW to maintain your manufacturer warranty. The DSG service is around $350, so $700-$800 for the 60,000km service on Tiguan sounds about right.

The 6Speed auto should be more reliable in long run costing less. The DSG gives a better fuel economy and performance.

As Transporter says DSG is the faster car. In the 132TSI the DSG does 7.9sec 0-100 whereas the same engine with auto box runs 9.6sec. So the auto is quite noticeably slower.

Also DSG has marginally better fuel economy 8.8l/100km vs 8.9l/100km. Though driving style will probably have a larger effect on which one uses more petrol.

Currently looking on Carsales for a 132 pacific however its quite hard finding a vehicle with all the added features I want. Ideally I'm looking for one with sunroof, bi-xenons, GPS navigation and maybe leather.

What are the chance that I pick one up for example with only the sunroof and having xenons and navigation added on by VW or a mechanic? If possible, will it be costly?

You can relatively easily add sat nav, possibly sunroof but bi xenons are by far the hardest/most expensive to fit aftermarket.

IMO find a Tig with Xenon's fitted by factory as Tigger 73 said. It hard and expensive to retrofit and IMO not worth it. If you can find one with with factory fitted Xenon's it will usually come highly spec'd with leather and navigation as well. I would stay well clear of the panoramic sunroof unless the car is still under warranty as they are known to give problems from what i have seen on other VW forums. You may have to look at the 155TSi's for Tigans fitted with Xenon's from factory. I have yet to see a 103TDi or 132TSi with Xenons on Caresales of late.

saw a 132 pacific in black go not too long a go with bixenon, leather and navigation in black go for $38xxx with 4000km, was heart broken.

Thanks for the advise guys. Can someone tell me the difference between the 155 and 132 pacific as well?
