    4 Wheel Drive

Just a question, the Tiguan is labeled as a 4X4 but i also know that the 4x4 is done with the 4motion technology or something along those lines.

I went on a hunting trip and had a little mishap were i kinda fell in a hole, rear passenger side wheel was no longer on the ground but unfortunately the only 2 wheels that power was being delivered to weren't those that i wanted. IF the tig had true 4x4 lock then i would have been out of my jam in an instant.

Is there anyway this can be manipulated or any 4x4 options via the computer?

I think the off-road pack option may help with this issue but it isn't really a 4x4 so it won't lock.

There was a video of the tig's in NSW that went off-road and you could pick the one without the off-road pack as it struggled in the gravel pit.

The Tiguan utilizes the Haldex coupling system, a 4wd system with no centre differential but a system of hydraulically actuated clutch packs that engage and disengage to create variable torque distribution, this system is controlled by a computer. Basically the car is nearly totally fwd all the the time, I believe 97%-3% Front-Rear split. With certain combinations of triggers (front axle slip of more than x degrees or certain throttle position, steering position, road speed, and engine rpm combinations), the system will ramp up and engage the rear wheels more and more up to 50%-50% split. When lifting off the throttle the Haldex unit will ramp down bringing the torque split back the the front wheels, the same happens under braking except the ramp down process is much quicker.

Every transverse engined 4wd VAG makes, be it an S3, .:R32, TT, Tiguan etc use variants of this system, i know at least for a few of these a performance haldex controller is available. Basically it works in the same way but instead of working of degrees of front axle slip, it works off throttle position, and is a lot more aggressive in its ramp up procedure. I have a blue HPP (haldex performance program controller) in my .:R32

The problem is, AFAIK the Tiguan has the same software as the others and the whole system isn't really designed for heavy off road use, light off road will be a breeze but when ever you are tackling something serious you need a low range box and locking differentials. That said, perhaps there is a HPP available set up to help Tiguans off road a bit more.

I think what i have stated is accurate but if anyone can shed some more light on Tiguan Haldex, they may be able to better help you with your question.

    Cheers, Pedro

TYpe 17 has the basics right. The standard split is 90% front 10% rear but it will control it as required. The off-road electronic pack alters a considerable number of settings and maintains the basic drive as 50/50. It also alters brake and throttle response, gear ratio usage (in the auto) and allows for an electronic version of a locked diff (as good as it can do). It also brings in a hill ascent and decent control. It does make a HUGE difference when things get tight but as stated by others the Tig is a "soft roader" rather than an off-roader, it's far more capable than many realise or would even attempt but it is limited in its overall abilities particularly through its ground clearance and tyre/wheel choice. One thing to try if you are "stuck" is to turn off the ESP and be prepared to give it a bit of throttle even though it doesn't seem to be working initially, it can take a while for the electronics to "decide" to control the spinning wheels (done through the 4 channel braking system) and so "hopefully" give some drive to the wheels that actually have grip.

    Cheers
