The VW filters are not much dearer than a generic one and probably better quality.

Oil can be bought at those places A 5w-30 VW APPROVED oil should be used Not "Suitable for" . APPROVED FOR Its on the label

Castrol put out an Edge 502 -505 for petrol and Penrite Enviro+ 5w-30 is an approved oil for diesels

Read the thread the oil advice is there.

Labels on the correct oils are clearly marked with approvals If its not there dont buy it.

It does pay to check your oil at no more than weekly intervals Anyone who doesnt check it deserves the consequences in my book.

When we were vanning every morning I checked oil, water and tyres without fail. Tested towbar bolts weekly.

....and generic filter companies make filters for Volkswagen, since the VW doesn't manufacture them.
The generic includes Mann, Knecht, Mahle. And also Filtron which is Wix filter company (factory is located in Poland) which is IMO the worst of them - just compare the air filter and you'll see what I mean.

Was thinking along the lines of the usual cheap rubbish like Ryco and some shops home branded stuff.

Cut a cheap one up for Toyota once and did a Toyota one and the difference was amazing to say the least.

Is an old thread on Lcool

For the uneducated (filter wise) its probably safest to stick with VW
