2009 Tiguan AC issue

Just noticed my Tiguan AC isn't very efficient, take ages to cool down then really not that much anyway. Took it to mechanic and he said not re-gas looks like compressor issue and referred me to AC guy..but before I do anyone have idea re cost i should expect etc?

Google search seem to indicate it can be costly and wondering if worth it due to age and value of the car. Had a Land Rover Freelander before this and at 8 years old its compressor went and quoted cost was $4000+ and since timing chain was due too ie another $2000 I just traded it in for this car..so hoping cost not in the same ball park.

I just had pretty much the entire air conditioning system replaced on my 2010 Tiguan because I drove it to destruction. Cost was quoted by two very seperate companies at $2400, inclusive of everything.

Need to establish what's failed on it.

Sometimes it's just the solenoid on it that dies, which still requires a compressor and receiver drier though.

When they want to replace everything, it's when the compressor itself has let go internally.

Yep went and got it checked by Indy Ac guy...quoted $1100 for new compressor and all work to replace it..its still working but at less than half pressure it should and actually drops under revs so needs replacing..sound like should get it replaced now before it fully fails and stuffs up more than just the compressor...booked it in for Friday.

Yep, take it from me, that is a good approach. If I'd noted the warning signs, it would have cost me half.

My 2011 Tiguan TDI AC failed (compressor I think) at about 40K and was replaced under warranty. Now at 159K and no problems since. It is used all the time and usually maxed out when the wife drives, so it has stood up to Qld weather quite well so far.

I paid about $1100 for a compressor replacement when mine died, I suspect it was dying just inside warranty, but didn't get to do anything about it until it was too late.
