18x8 wheels with 255/45/18 tyres?

It's about time for me to change a new set of tyres. Currently running oem rims 18x8, fitted with 235/50/18 tyres, now am considering 255/45/18 for a bulkier/meatier look. I have been searching some answers online and I know this topic has been around for many years but there is still no one good answer from a tyre specialist or experienced mechanic. Will it fit 18x8 wheel at all? Some people said it will be too much, and some said it's the maximum recommended size...

Any feedback would be much appreciated guys..

I have 245 and they are as wide as i would want to go on a 8" wheel.
Some google searching brought back the same comments and questions about legality if you go over that size.

245's already bulge out slightly so 255's would be a more noticable bulge.

Pretty sure i read somewhere that the maximum recommended for an 8 1/2 inch rim is a 255 wide tyre, so would say 255 is definitely too wide for an 8 inch...

Thanks mate, are you on 245/45/18? It's also a lot cheaper than the 255/45/18...but there's about 2.1% difference in speedo reading...Since the stock setting is already 5km/h slower, correct me if I'm wrong, so if your speedo says 100km/h, your actual speed would be somewhere around 94km/h?

245/45/19.
It reads 2% over stock which partly cancels out the 6% under reading in the standard speedo.

Rim width range for 255/45r18 is generally 8"-9.5". Go to tire rack, plug in the tyre size & have a look at the specs for a particular tyre confirm as there are exception.

That tyre rim combo will be a bit bulgy so the ride will be plush but turn-in response will be a fraction soggy as well. Will you notice it? 99% of the time probably not unless you tend to drive a bit quick around corners.

Both 245/45 & 255/45 will be a smaller diameter than 235/50 & therefore the speedo will have an even bigger gap from reality than previously (ie: using 245/45 it will be 8% out rather than 6% ).

I have no idea about the price but 245/50r18 will fit well on your rims & reduce the difference between actual speed & indicated speed.

Thanks Brad. Actually I don't mind the bulgy look. As long as the handling is not overly compromised and it's legal, I'm happy to give it a try. Might have to keep an eye out on the tyre pressure though.

personally, I'd go bigger diameter rather than smaller. It looks better, if nothing else.
