It is a major service because it involves a replacement of the timing belt. My car hasn't reached 120K km yet, but because of a water pump failure at around 90K km I had the timing belt replaced then since many of the same disassembly was already required. I think it added in the high-hundreds to the cost, so I expect you will be well over the $1,000 mark for the 120K km service.

The 2.0TSI engine uses a timing chain, not a belt (although the TDI does use a timing belt). So the chain is not replaced unless it has stretched or failing in some other manner.

The 120k service will consist of:

    - DSG Gearbox service (oil and oil filter change)
    - Haldex AWD service (oil change)
    - Brake fluid change
    - Brakes may need to be changed depending on wear and when/if they have been replaced before
    - Engine oil and oil filter change
    - Cabin A/C filter
    - Engine air filter

There might be a few other things on the 120k service list, but those should be most of them. It will be $1000-1200+ plus with at least 1/2 of that being the DSG and Haldex service costs.

    120K for this one is:

    - Engine oil and filter
    - DSG oil and filter
    - Spark plugs

Brake fluid is every 2 years.
Haldex oil is every 3 years.
Cabin filter is every 2 years.

This is as per VW's Australian service schedule.

Had my 120K done last month at reputable independent, all of the above + manual gearbox oil change (at my request). $850. Oh! No air filter as i have a 'servicable' one that i clean & re-oil myself. A little shocked to see spark plugs @ $29 ea!!

That's not too bad for plugs, considering a set for an R36 Passat are about $220.
