Question What is my Navigation System saying to me??

    Guys,

We have a MK6 GTD with the Navigation system and besides the fact she talks a bit too fast she keeps saying something like "Turn left to dulmigson" or something like that. It doesn't matter where we have told her to go she says this quite a bit. Just be nice to know if someone else has this issue?

Another issue is every now and then there will be a beep type tone that comes from the speakers. We have bluetooth streaming going normally. Any ideas?

If it's not already done, upgrading to the V5 maps might help, as also might installing later firmware — links to both can be found elsewhere in this forum.

My Mk 6 TDI beeps at me now and then — sometimes I can see a reason, sometimes not. If the reason isn't obvious I just ignore it.

Its already the v5 maps. It is saying 'Take the next left towards dummy' because our map data is incomplete (as usual).

It is trying to use the text to speech engine to read the town name and say 'Take the next left towards Carlton' or whatever. But the map data VW use in Aus has always been woefully incomplete when compared with Europe. Not to mention out dated.

So it could easily be fixed by VW Aus if they just made a properly compatible map disk (that could also include Traffic Management Channel info should they chose to license access to Intellimatic's FM service).

The beep could be TMC telling you it has no data. Check that its disabled in the menu as it will not work here (ever? yet?).

The beep usually means you've lost connection to GPS satellites (I only get it when in underground carparks or in forests.

What is my Navigation System saying to me??

Dream on!!!! That's the whole issue with VW map data it's basic compared to cheaper gps unit like Tom Tom for example. I had the same issue when heading down to Canberra a few weeks back last words spoken by gps could not be understood. I tried both male and female voice setting and found no change.

Doesn't everyone have Google Maps on their phone these days anyway?

Yeah true!! but why resort to your phone when you paid for something thats highly capable and should do the same thing. VW need a good kick in the backside for their ****ty map data.

They provide the underlying geographic data which is then baked into a format consumable by various companies depending on the nav software of choice. So vwa via Continental are responsible for the product in its end user form.
You can't go to Bosch if you have a problem with the ecu in your car. They didn't sell it to you. They sold it as part of a huge bulk order to vw.

I think it all boils down to money — VW overprice the option on the new car — few people buy it — therefore VW opt for the cheapest map data they can get, which turns out to be a cut-down and out-of-date version of what the mass-market hand-helds use.

In countries where more units are sold, the optional equipment is usually cheaper and the maps are better.

One day someone will get into serious trouble from relying on these maps and (hopefully) the vendors thereof will have to cough up damages and may then wake up to themselves.
