Do you mean it actually says "Stay on this road for 100km' instead of "for a long time"

or when turning it says "Turn into smith St" instead of saying "turn here' 50 metres before the corner

I think he means "Turn left towards Melbourne" rather then 'Turn left towards dummy"

I've only actually used proper nav once or twice since upgrading to v5 - most times I'll just hit maps and work it out on my own, I have a pretty good sense of direction.

Yes it now says town names. Tts for street names not expected to ever be implemented as its not a feature in Europe.
Still says keep straight on this road for a long time if over some distance, not sure what that limit is. More than 5kms but less than 20..

I've always said the GPS in mum's Tiguan was horrible but now that I've got my own RNS510 in my 13.5 Passat, I barely want to use it! The "turn left towards dummy" line is confusing although coincidentally, I happened to turn towards a Chery dealership how do we check the version? My car is two months old, you'd think it would have up to date software!

Another thing; does it confuse anyone else when it says "turn onto the S70"? No one know what the state/national route numbers are... I simply know it as the Sunshine Motorway or Old Cleveland Road etc.

It seems that there was a sever lack of common sense when developing the software!

Turn unit on Hold SETUP down till screen changes to the two radio bands and Version information
Press that and it will go to black and white screen and will tell you on one line

SW version XXXX Thats the Firmware

Further down it will say MAP version XXXX

It's a shame that for the cost VW don't at least include free updates, even if they included it as a bonus and tied it to servicing at a dealership it would be a step forward

That said, look at the traditional alternatives from Pioneer etc. Most of them have a similar high price tag and a rather low feature set compared to the portable units as well as having the map upgrade (or loack of) issues.

I'm a little surprised that the big name portable guys (like TomTom) haven't partnered with VW (and/or all the other manufacturers) to integrate their maps into the built in solutions (hell even Pioneer, Clarion etc etc).

...one day... one day *fingers crossed*

Back on topic for a moment, I'll be interested to see how people go with the V6 maps (especially at $110). I wonder what they add over V5 and if it's worth the upgrade.
Sums it up accurately, and earnestly. My MY11 Octy vRS is the first new car I've ever bought. It came with the Columbus satnav (RNS 510), but I had to install a BT unit after purchase. BT became standard on MY12 models. The TomTom mightn't have the greatest in-built BT, but it had one and an SD card slot to allow customisation as well. Overall I'm still very happy with the car, but it has niggled me for the last two years since driving it out of the dealership that my old stick-on-the-screen TomTom not only has better mapping and guidance (visual and oral), but that the TomTom mapping is frequently updated, and the updates are readily accessible and affordable. Thanks to a couple of members here we have the ability to add speed cameras to our collections of personal POI's, but alas no audible notifications, or easy source of regular updates of the camera POI's, as is the case in both instances with my 6 year old TomTom.

In brief, it will p!$$ me off for as long as I own this car that when I moved to it from my old one that I have taken a huge backward step with regard to the satnav. It shouldn't bother me. It obviously doesn't bother VWA. If they had to be dragged kicking and screaming to announce a recall on the DSG gearboxes I wouldn't get your collective hopes up of seeing any improvement to the satnav mapping anytime soon.
