True about the price for the V7 maps...

A big disappointment is the fact traffic updates still are not enabled for the RNS 510 and its equivalents... Noticed that one can purchase the V10 maps for both east & west Europe for a fraction of what we pay here and get traffic updates as well... Yes, I know they have economies of scale because of the no. of VWs there but the disparity is a lot -

Rather than sell them at a premium and have lots left over wouldn't it be better to cut the price and sell the lot.
No, they should be destroyed to keep the price up, that's the right way of looking at it from the business point of view.

Different version which has traffic enabled.

Also VW have to pay a subscription to be able to offer traffic here.

Was meaning sometimes its better to adopt the US method of selling. Make 10% on 50 articles rather than 50% on one,

Case in point I bought some high end stereo gear in the US years ago. Wasn't even on this side of the world and they were selling it for a lot less than it eventually was here. After using the speakers for several years I sold them for 50% more than I paid for them and that was to a dealer as well.

Lots and often. Turn the cash over. Doesn't make money with stock unsold on the shelf.

That's my point - they sell at a lower price despite having to pay a license fee (which they must be paying on their Mk7 Golfs in Australia anyway)...

There is one site selling V6 maps cheaply at the moment ($50) but as far as NSW is concerned at least this is as good as useless as all the route numbers changed to alphanumerics late last year...

So...you believe that selling an item for less than what you paid for it, is better than destroying it and losing a sale on the new/latest/full price item that you may be required to stock (at a minimum stock level of say....50 items)?
Either way you lose...but selling the new stock keeps the supplier happy, the dealership owner happy....and let's face it, the old stock has probably been written off/down under tax declarations anyway.

Personally....I think your view may be flawed.

I wasn't saying that at all and was not referring to the old unsold VW stock.

What I meant was its better in some cases to keep turning over stock at a smaller return per item than try to maximize price and profit on one and not sell because of price.

I meant 10% profit per item and sell lots rather than 50% on each and sell none

I obviously don't know the numbers but I'd be very surprised if VW weren't making money if they sold them at $50 or $60 per disc... The disc itself would be pocket change (to produce) but most of the rest would be fees to Sensis etc. etc.

A new paper street directory is about $50 here and those who use(d) them used to pay to update them when they chose to. I don't recall too many people photocopying the Melways?

Site sponsor JKU has them currently on the bay of evil for $108 (albeit with $55 post- which I hope is an error because one will fit in a $10 postpack). I really don't think that $50-100 is that unreasonable and I doubt that it will be too long before that's the ballpark.

One would hope that some of the funds go into making better and more accurate and up to date maps. No funds? No new maps....
